Athlete Address Residency Documentation

Use this section to determine what address an athlete may use for NCAA Basketball Certification and what documentation is required to prove the address can be used.

Host Family Address or Boarding School Address

What is required to use the address:

  • The host family address is in the same locale as the school the athlete attends.
  • The athlete was present within the first 30 days of the fall or spring semester.
  • The athlete remained enrolled at the same school for the entire academic year.
  • The athlete expects to complete the academic year at the same school.

How to prove the address can be used for non-U.S. athletes:

  • Transcript from the school showing the athlete was at the school within the first 30 days of the fall or spring semester and grades to date.
  • I-20 application for the school the athlete is currently attending.
  • F1 visa.

How to prove the address can be used for U.S. athletes:

  • Transcript from the school showing the athlete was at school within the first 30 days of the fall or spring semester and grades to date.

Legal Guardian Address

What is required to use the address:

  • The guardianship was established in a court of law or by a government agency.
  • The parents’ rights have been permanently severed.
  • The guardianship was not established for the purpose of attending school or playing basketball.

How to prove the address can be used:

  • Copy of the court order or state agency placement order granting custody of the athlete to the legal guardian.

Same Address or Phone Number

A same address or phone number justification will appear when the athlete shares an address or phone number with someone else on the bench who does not have the same last name.

This may include:

  • A parent or sibling with a different last name.
  • A step-parent.
  • Another student with the same host family.
  • A similar relationship.

The coach must provide documentation showing the familial relationship.

How to prove the address can be used:

  • Birth certificate for a parent/child relationship.
  • Birth certificate and either a marriage certificate, tax return or insurance statement showing the athlete as dependent for a step-parent, sibling or stepsibling relationship.
  • Athlete’s transcript or report card showing a full academic year of attendance in the same locale as the team’s address.

IMPORTANT NOTE
An athlete is expected to select a single permissible address to utilize for the duration of the season. For example, an athlete may utilize a permissible school address in one state to participate in spring events and a home address in a different state to participate in summer events but should not utilize addresses in two different states during the same season. Athletes should add both addresses to their account at registration/renewal.
