What to Know Before You Transfer
Transferring schools affects both your academic progress and your athletic eligibility. The decision to transfer to a new NCAA school, or ultimately stay at your current one, requires research and careful consideration of how relevant rules and timelines may impact you. The steps and resources below will help you understand the process, find the right fit, and protect your eligibility.
How the Transfer Portal Works
The Transfer Portal is the NCAA’s centralized database where student-athletes who intend to transfer are listed. When you notify your current school that you want to transfer, your school enters your name in the Portal. Being in the Portal signals to other schools that you are available and opens the door to contact from coaches.
NCAA transfer research data tracks Portal trends and informs ongoing rule discussions. For division-specific guides and flyers: see the resources section below.
Transfer Guides and Resources
Use these guides, flowcharts, and tools to navigate your specific transfer situation. Download the guide for your division and transfer path before you begin the process. NCAA transfer research data is also available to help you understand trends and how rules continue to evolve.
If you are unsure which resources apply to your situation, start with the guide for your transfer type and contact your compliance office with questions.
Questions about your specific situation should go to the athletics compliance office at your current school or the school you plan to attend.
