From Revenue to Impact

The NCAA receives most of its annual revenue from two primary sources: media and marketing rights tied to the Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, and championship ticket sales. That money is distributed in more than a dozen ways — almost all of which directly support member schools, athletic conferences, and the student-athletes who compete across all three divisions.

The Board of Governors, which includes representatives from each division along with public members, provides oversight of the Association’s finances and distribution model. The result is a structure designed to put the NCAA’s resources where its mission lives: in classrooms, on playing fields, and in championship moments.

Revenue Sources

Where the Money Comes From

Two main streams account for the vast majority of NCAA annual revenue. Both are tied to championship competition — and both flow back into the membership through the distribution model.

Now, where does it all go?

Where the Money Goes

To Schools & Conferences

The largest share of NCAA revenue flows directly to Division I schools and conferences through three distribution funds. Together, they help fund sports programs, scholarships, and conference operations across the division.

Where the Money Goes

To Student-Athlete Programs

A significant portion of NCAA revenue funds programs designed to support student-athletes directly — through academic services, individual benefits, and the championship experiences that define their NCAA careers.

Where the Money Goes

To Divisions II, III & Operations

NCAA revenue also funds Divisions II and III through fixed percentage allocations, plus the Association-wide governance and operations that make the entire enterprise possible.
