Athletics Health Care Administration and Medical Oversight

Athletics health care administration focuses on creating systems that ensure independent medical care and oversight of the delivery of athletics health care.

Schools are encouraged to set up systems that protect the independent authority of team physicians and athletic trainers so they can make medical and return-to-play decisions without outside pressure.

A key component of this framework is the requirement for each school to designate an Athletics Health Care Administrator who oversees the administration and delivery of athletics health care across campus.

Education & Resources

In addition to providing campuses with resources such as the Athletics Health Care Administrator Handbook and the NCAA Sports Medicine Handbook, the SSI and leading scientific and sports medicine organizations have developed evidence- and consensus-based guidance regarding independent medical care, which articulate the principles and strategies necessary to facilitate an environment that promotes the health, safety and performance of student-athletes.
