What the Program Does

The NCAA sponsors the Catastrophic Injury Insurance Program for all active member schools. The program is designed to supplement, not replace, existing primary insurance coverage. Coverage begins when a student-athlete’s covered medical expenses exceed the policy deductible.

Although the program is intended to address catastrophic injuries, an injury does not have to be catastrophic in nature to qualify for benefits if covered expenses exceed the deductible.

How the Coverage Works

Covered Participants

Applies to student-athletes participating in covered intercollegiate athletics activities.

Excess Coverage

Provides benefits after any other valid and collectible insurance has been applied.

Deductible Threshold

Coverage is triggered once covered medical expenses exceed $90,000.

Institutional Administration

Claims are administered at the school level with required reporting and documentation.

Institutional Responsibilities

Member schools are responsible for reporting catastrophic injuries promptly, coordinating claims submissions and maintaining accurate documentation. Following established reporting procedures helps ensure claims are reviewed efficiently and coverage eligibility is maintained.

Report an Injury

Institutions must report catastrophic injuries promptly using the NCAA’s designated reporting system.
