Steve Piotrowski, who has more than four decades of collegiate ice hockey officiating experience, has been named the NCAA secretary-rules editor for men’s and women’s ice hockey, effective Sept. 1.
He will succeed Jeff Fulton, who was named the national coordinator of men’s ice hockey officials last week.
This appointment will be Piotrowski’s second stint as the secretary-rules editor for the sport. Previously, he held the position from 2008-19.
“When coaches, officials, administrators and student-athletes share a clear understanding of the rules and their intent, the game is better served,” Piotrowski said. “The secretary-rules editor position provides an opportunity to help strengthen that understanding through education, communication and collaboration across all levels of NCAA hockey. After serving previously in the role and remaining deeply involved in the game, I look forward to bringing both experience and a current perspective to work that has a meaningful impact on our sport.”
Since 2012, Piotrowski has served as the coordinator of men’s ice hockey officials for the Big Ten Conference. From 2007-12, he was the director of officials for the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
Before moving to the administrative side of officiating, Piotrowski worked as an on-ice official from 1983-2007.
He officiated more than 1,300 Division I men’s ice hockey games and was selected to referee 14 NCAA tournaments, including six national title games.
Piotrowski, who played collegiate hockey at Ferris State, was selected by the International Ice Hockey Federation to officiate world championship and world junior championship games, too.
“College hockey has given me tremendous opportunities throughout my career, and I see this role as a meaningful way to give back,” Piotrowski said. “I pursued this role because I believe the rules are one of the foundations of competitive integrity in college hockey.”
