Most NCAA revenue returns to the membership in the form of direct distributions and services for the membership.
The NCAA annually distributes about 60% of all NCAA revenue — more than $600 million — directly to Division I schools and conferences. The revenue includes several specific funds to support student-athletes. Additionally, more than $150 million goes toward funding Division I’s 26 championships.
In Division I, the Basketball Performance Fund rewards long-term performance in the Men’s Basketball Championship. The NCAA receives most of its revenue from the Division I Men’s Basketball Championship television and marketing rights, as well as championship ticket sales.
The Academic Enhancement Fund enhances academic support programs at Division I member schools. Common uses include tutorial services, equipment, supplies and additional personnel. There’s also an Academic Performance Fund that bases its distribution amounts on academic achievement of student-athletes.
The Student Assistance Fund aims to assist student-athletes with special financial needs. Most of this money is used for educational purposes, with some also going for needs such as clothing.
Other funds include distributions for sports sponsorship, grants-in-aid and conference grants.
