Walter Byers Graduate Scholarship

The Walter Byers Graduate Scholarship is the NCAA's most prestigious academic award, established to recognize and encourage outstanding student-athletes who combine the highest levels of academic achievement with a commitment to service and leadership. Named for the NCAA's first executive director, Walter Byers, this scholarship supports recipients as they pursue graduate study in any field of their choice.

Who's Eligible

  • Graduating senior at an NCAA member institution
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher (4.0 scale)
  • Participation in intercollegiate athletics at the varsity level
  • Intends to enroll full-time in an accredited graduate program
  • Demonstrates exceptional character, leadership, and service

How to Apply

Student-athletes are nominated by their institution's Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) or a designated administrator.

Nomination packet must include:

  • Completed nomination form
  • Official undergraduate transcripts
  • Personal statement describing academic goals, leadership contributions, and honors awarded
  • At least one letter of recommendation highlighting academic, athletic, and personal achievements

Walter Byers Scholarship Committee

Award Details

  • Two recipients annually (one female, one male)
  • Each award provides $24,000 for graduate study
  • Scholarship is nonrenewable and must be used toward enrollment in an accredited graduate program
