The NCAA and the office of legal affairs announced senior vice president Scott Bearby has assumed the role of chief legal officer and Greg Pottorff has been promoted to vice president and general counsel.Â
Bearby had served as senior vice president of legal affairs and general counsel, overseeing the office of legal affairs, hearing operations and government affairs. As chief legal officer, Bearby will lead enterprise legal strategy for legal affairs, government relations and hearing operations. Â
Bearby was named vice president of legal affairs and general counsel in August 2016 after serving in various legal positions at the national office since January 1999.Â
Before joining the NCAA, Bearby spent six years in private practice. A native of Hammond, Indiana, he earned his bachelor's degree in government from Notre Dame and his law degree from Indiana.Â
As vice president and general counsel, Pottorff will manage the office of legal affairs, including strategic direction, litigation, membership relations, budget accountability, human resources and public relations. Â
Pottorff has worked for the NCAA for six years, serving as managing director of legal affairs and senior counsel for litigation and development since May 2024.Â
Before joining the NCAA, Pottorff spent more than eight years in private practice at a national law firm in Indianapolis, handling complex, high-risk litigation. Pottorff is a Munster, Indiana, native and former NCAA soccer player. He received a bachelor's degree from Indiana University  Indianapolis and a law degree from Indiana.Â
The office of legal affairs handles numerous legal responsibilities for the Association, including managing litigation involving the national office and supporting its governance and sport committees, its more than 90 championships and national office staff in assisting the membership and student-athletes.Â
The new roles are effective immediately.Â
