Over the next year, he will work with current secretary-rules editor Jon Levinson, whose term expires in August 2026, to help with a smooth transition.

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved Schmidt for the position last week.

"I'm honored to step into the role of secretary-rules editor at such a pivotal moment for women's college basketball," Schmidt said. "I'm grateful for Jon Levinson's decade of dedicated service and look forward to building on that foundation. It's an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of rules education and contribute to the continued growth and excellence of our game."

For the past 21 years, Schmidt has officiated Division I women's basketball games in the Western Athletic Conference, Mountain West Conference, West Coast Conference, Big West Conference, Big Sky Conference and The Summit League.

His postseason assignments include officiating in the Division I Women's Basketball Championship for the past three years, the Women's National Invitation Tournament six times and the Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament in 2024. Schmidt was also assigned to work the WAC tournament in 2023 and 2024 and the Mountain West tournament last season.

In addition, Schmidt contributed to the creation of the inaugural rules book for the Unrivaled league, a women's professional 3-on-3 basketball league founded by professional players Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart.

Schmidt, who has worked for several companies in software engineering, has served as a contributing writer and content reviewer for Referee magazine and currently serves as the primary National Federation of State High School Associations rules interpreter for more than 50 high schools in Idaho.
