CSMAS subcommittee recommends no additional changes to testosterone threshold for trans women at 2022 women’s swimming and diving championships

Decision comes after review of updated USA Swimming standard

There will be no changes to the NCAA's previously approved testosterone threshold for transgender women to compete at the 2022 women's swimming and diving championships, based on the recommendation of the Administrative Subcommittee of the Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports to the NCAA Board of Governors. The Administrative Subcommittee discussed the previously approved NCAA testosterone threshold (10 nmol/L) on Monday after USA Swimming updated its policy last week.

At its Jan. 19 meeting, the Board of Governors approved updates to the NCAA transgender student-athlete participation policy, which aligns participation with the Olympic movement. The Phase One eligibility requirements and related documentation submission timelines communicated from that decision, including for the 2022 NCAA women's swimming and diving championships and other winter championship events, will remain in effect.

Based on the transgender student-athlete participation policy approved in January and the NCAA testosterone thresholds approved thereafter, the Administrative Subcommittee of the CSMAS reviewed USA Swimming's new testosterone threshold. The subcommittee decided implementing additional changes at this time could have unfair and potentially detrimental impacts on schools and student-athletes intending to compete in 2022 NCAA women's swimming championships.

USA Swimming's policy was released after the start of the four-week window in which schools could submit required eligibility documentation (e.g., testosterone lab results). The subcommittee noted the four-week window was designed to provide schools and student-athletes adequate time to consider eligibility requirements and related health care options and to safely obtain documentation.

USA Swimming's new policy will be part of the subcommittee's future analysis when recommending additional updates to eligibility requirements for Phase Two (2022-23 academic year) and Phase Three (2023-24 academic year).
