Division I Football Oversight Committee confirms selection process for bowl game participants

The Division I Football Oversight Committee today confirmed it would follow its previously approved process for selecting 5-7 teams for bowl participation in the event of openings.

The teams will be deemed eligible in descending order from the school with highest multiyear Academic Performance Rate. The APR data most recently reported by the schools was used in selecting teams. This data was not publicly released this year as part of the Division I Board of Directors' response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier this month, members were notified of their ranked eligibility. As some schools may choose to decline participation opportunities, the NCAA will not make the list publicly available.

The Football Oversight Committee also stressed the importance of the health and safety and well-being of the participating student-athletes and reminded any 5-7 teams eligible for bowl participation of their obligations related to the health and well-being of their student-athletes, including those related to acclimatization and ramp-up conditioning described in more detail in Interassociation Recommendations: Preventing Catastrophic Injury and Death in Collegiate Athletes.  Schools are encouraged to consult, as necessary, with applicable campus risk managers and medical personnel to determine how best to address these and other student-athlete health and safety considerations. Any bowl game can be moved to as late as Jan. 10 without a waiver to accommodate schools that might need additional time to prepare for competition.
