Staying Eligible at a Division I School

Once enrolled at a Division I school, student-athletes must continue meeting NCAA academic requirements to practice, compete and receive athletics aid. Two-year and four-year transfer student-athletes also are required to meet certain progress-toward-degree benchmarks at the time of transfer. Additionally, four-year transfer student-athletes must have been academically eligible at their previous school to be immediately eligible for competition and athletically related financial aid at the school to which they are transferring.

Division I progress-toward-degree requirements are designed to guide student-athletes to graduation within five years of initial enrollment.

Credit Hours

All Division I student-athletes must earn at least six credit hours each term to be eligible for the following term and 18-semester or 27-quarter hours over the year to be eligible the next academic year. There are some sport specific requirements as well.

Percentage of Degree

Division I student-athletes must complete 40% of required degree credit before the start of their third year of enrollment, 60% before the start of their fourth year, and 80% before the start of their fifth year.

Grade-Point-Average

Division I student-athletes must meet minimum grade-point average requirements based on their school’s cumulative GPA standards for graduation.
