The Division I Football Championship Subdivision Oversight Committee is asking the Division I Cabinet to amend a proposal introduced in July by the Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee to include FCS football.
The proposal would prohibit men’s basketball staff members from attending other Division I preseason, regular-season or conference tournament contests, with limited exceptions for a contest involving a family member of a men’s basketball staff member or one that is part of a tournament or event in which the school’s team is participating.
If the Division I Cabinet amends the proposal during its meeting Oct. 6-7, the same restrictions would apply to FCS football staff members, who would not be permitted to attend other Division I contests, including those involving teams that are not future opponents.
The FCS Oversight Committee identified several exceptions to the proposed legislation applicable to FCS football staff members.
FCS football staff members could attend the FCS national championship game and the College Football Playoff national championship game.
Another exception would allow football staff members at schools that are members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference to attend the Celebration Bowl.
Finally, all football staff members from Southwestern Athletic Conference schools could attend the SWAC championship game.
The Division I Football Bowl Subdivision Oversight Committee last week requested the Division I Cabinet to amend the proposal to include FBS football.
The Cabinet must review the proposal before it becomes effective.
Out-of-season activities
The FCS Oversight Committee also voted to amend its out-of-season activities proposal to allow on-field practices and skill instruction to begin Feb. 1 instead of Jan. 1, as originally proposed.
This amendment prevents overlap with football’s notification-of-transfer period and the start of the regular academic term following the conclusion of the season.
