The NCAA is committed to helping Division I student-athletes complete their undergraduate education, even after their athletics eligibility has been exhausted. The Division I Degree Completion Award Program provides financial assistance to former student-athletes who return to campus to finish their degrees.
Who's Eligible
- Former NCAA Division I student-athlete
- Must have received athletically related financial aid — either as:
- A student-athlete in a headcount sport (full athletics aid), or
- A student-athlete in any sport who received partial athletics aid
- Exhausted all athletic eligibility
- Within 30 semester hours (or equivalent) of completing the first undergraduate degree
- Good academic standing before leaving school
- Demonstrated character, leadership, and service
How to Apply
Applicants work through their Division I institution's athletics compliance office.
Required materials include:
- Completed application form
- Official transcript showing completed coursework
- Statement of academic intent and plan for completion
- Financial need documentation

Selection Criteria
- Progress toward degree — Demonstrated academic commitment before departure.
- Financial need — Clear evidence that assistance is required to return.
- Character & leadership — Positive impact while a student-athlete.
- Likelihood of completion — Strong plan for completing remaining credits.
Award Details
- Covers tuition and required fees needed to complete an undergraduate degree
- Funding provided for up to one academic year or until degree requirements are met
- Award value is the lesser of tuition for remaining credits or $15,000
- May be applied to summer terms within the 10-semester/15-quarter eligibility window
- Does not cover optional coursework, minors, or extra credits beyond degree requirements
- May transfer to another Division IÂ institution if all requirements are met and paperwork is completed
- Awards are granted annually based on available NCAA funds
- Covers tuition and required fees needed to complete an undergraduate degree.
- Funding may be provided for up to one academic year or until degree requirements are met.
