The Inclusion, Education and Community Engagement group includes three offices devoted to serving NCAA student-athletes, member schools and conference offices.Internship opportunities are available within the offices of inclusion, leadership development and an immersion role.

Postgraduate interns work directly with student-athletes, athletics department staff, administrators in higher education and affiliate groups to provide resources and educational programming to the membership.

Over 85 percent of the interns who have worked in these offices obtained successful employment within college athletics and higher education. Including:

  • Arthur Hightower (Los Angeles Chargers) senior director of player engagement
  • Scott Koenning (RISE) senior director, programs
  • Rekha Patterson (Southeast Missouri State University) head women’s basketball coach

Job Descriptions:

General position summary: The inclusion intern will support the office of inclusion by developing and presenting educational programming to the NCAA membership and national office, collaborating on event planning for the annual NCAA Impact Forum, contributing to key initiatives such as the NCAA social media campaign, and providing project management and subject matter expertise for resource development. These responsibilities support the NCAA national office, member schools, member conferences and student-athletes in their belonging and well-being efforts. The primary focus of the inclusion intern will be to support internal and external efforts related to belonging and well-being. The intern will also receive practical experience in the offices of leadership development and community engagement. 
The 2026-27 NCAA inclusion intern will be supervised by one of the directors of inclusion. While engaged in initiatives/projects/programming led by the supervising director, the intern will also have the opportunity for a robust and meaningful experience across the office of inclusion major programs and initiatives, all with an intersectional approach.

Former inclusion interns have accepted jobs at the NCAA national office, member schools, conferences and professional sports organizations; pursued advanced degrees; and obtained careers specific to enhancing belonging and well-being within a variety of industries.

Desired knowledge, skills and abilities of candidates: Possess a high level of organization and attention to detail; self-start and show initiative and leadership; have strong analytical and communication skills; can collaborate in a team environment and work independently; are willing to think critically and learn about belonging and well-being; have a strong work ethic; are comfortable public speaking and educating; possess a willingness to be flexible; and have a passion for using sports as an agent for access and opportunity. 

Essential duties:

  • Engage and partner with all members of the office of inclusion in various intersectional efforts:
    • Support the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee/NCAA Para-College Inclusion Project.
    • Support development of resources and future initiatives for international engagement.
    • Support the Common Ground program. 
    • Support programming and collaborations with historically Black colleges and universities. 
    • Support efforts to expand participation opportunities for women in sports and grow the pipeline of women in athletics leadership. 
  • Assist the office of inclusion in planning, managing, communicating and executing large-scale events, such as the NCAA Impact Forum.
  • Lead in the planning, management, socialization and execution of the NCAA social media campaign.
  • Support at least one program or event in the offices of leadership development and community engagement. 
  • Engage with and support the NCAA Committee on Access, Opportunity and Impact.
  • Research, edit and assist in compiling resources related to belonging and well-being for the NCAA membership and national office.
  • Present and facilitate content related to belonging and well-being for the NCAA membership and national office.
  • Manage other responsibilities as determined by the needs of the department.

General position summary: NCAA leadership development educates and empowers student-athletes, coaches and athletics administrators through transformative experiences that develop effective leaders, cultivate an inclusive community and enhance the college sports landscape.

The leadership development interns are responsible for actively participating in the planning, development and implementation of the various events and programs offered by the unit that directly serve membership audiences. Additionally, interns in leadership development will be charged with leading internal and external projects that will assist the unit in meeting its goals and priorities. The intern position requires travel for on-site implementation of program duties and semi-frequent overtime hours due to programming responsibilities.

Former interns from this department have gone on to serve in roles within intercollegiate athletics that include student-athlete development, career development, athletics academic advising, diversity, equity and inclusion, and athletic development.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel and Outlook software and usage of general office equipment.
  • Knowledge of higher education and collegiate athletics.
  • Passion for the development of others.

Essential duties:

  • Actively participate in the program development process, assisting with the program schedule and curriculum creation, speaker communication, event flow and logistics.
  • On-site execution of program responsibilities, including:
    • Managing the working schedule that details daily responsibilities of each staff member during a program.
    • Assisting with the operational and logistical needs of the event.
    • Facilitating activities, panels and group discussions.
    • Managing speaker and participant communication during event dates.
    • Supporting program administrator, speakers and consultants as needed during program sessions.
  • Manage external inquiries from speakers, consultants and other resource providers.
  • Coordinate the distribution of DiSC assessments to membership institutions.
  • Assist in the management of the diversity grant initiative for Division II and Division III.
  • Engage in special projects assigned by leadership development staff.
  • Participate on at least one cross-functional team, demonstrating collaboration and performance that enhances team performance.
  • Additional internship assignments may include the following, dependent on skills/experience:
    • Support of e-learning staff with content creation and module development such as script writing, sourcing of assets (e.g., photos) and module testing.
      • Serve as an NCAA Learning Portal administrator.
      • Collaborate with subject matter experts.
      • Contribute to content creation.
      • Participate in e-learning project planning.
      • Design reports.
      • Assist in assessment and online learning modules
    • Support of leadership development design and branding strategy.
    • Assistance with creating leadership development newsletter, website and social media content.
    • Maintenance of leadership development’s alumni database.
    • Assistance with creating leadership development annual report.

This role is designed for those individuals that have an interest in working in community engagement and leadership development.

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Self-starter, analytical and detail-oriented, a critical thinker, strong communication (written and verbal) skills, collaborative in a team environment to reach goals, an attitude of respect and a strong receptiveness to learning more about developing people, community engagement, and equity, diversity and inclusion. A strong work ethic, a willingness to be flexible, computer software knowledge, and open to expansive opportunities.

General position summary: The Inclusion Education and Community Engagement Immersion intern will assist staff in the areas of Community Engagement and Leadership Development.

Essential duties in each area: 

AASP/Community Engagement

The intern will gain experience in both Project Management, Program Design, and Communications Contact with vendors, contractors, maintenance staff, community stakeholders, and national office staff.

Assist with the management of the Accelerating Academic Success Program and Community Engagement Initiatives that include, but not limited to:

  • Monitoring and updating SharePoint, monitoring the AASP inbox, updating brochures and other documents. 
  • Assist in creating events and managing the Community Engagement digital tracking tool, Helper Helper, and generate data driven reports and materials for SVP IECE  
  • Ensure Ambassador Program is properly aligned with and integrated into Human Resources 
  • Create and update the annual Community Engagement calendar for national office, SharePoint and portal
  • Serve as liaison to coordinate Team IMPACT X NCAA Championship experiences with student-athletes and families 
  • Assist with coordination of grant reporting processes and attend all AASP staff liaison team meetings and other AASP-related meetings to draft meeting reports.
  • Submit Community Engagement projects in Asana tool for communications 
  • Assist with coordination and serve as liaison for Readers Become Leaders matinee games and events 
  • Participate in the processing and review of grant/award applications and grant renewal assessments. 
  • Assist in AASP academic research efforts with tasks such as data collection, data analysis (qualitative and quantitative), literature reviews, survey administration and focus group facilitation.
  • Assist in deriving, updating and publishing new AASP best practices.
  • Serve as an AASP conference team member in the planning, development and execution of the annual conference.
  • Assist with the creative design process in the development of AASP marketing, promotional and conference materials.  
  • Assist with the coordination, development, and logistics planning around the Men’s and Women’s Final Four Legacy Projects.

Leadership Development 

The intern will gain experience in planning, developing and implementing various initiatives and programs offered by the unit that directly serve membership audiences.

  • Assist the Associate Director with administration of the postgraduate internship program (PGIP) including:
    • Planning, leading and communicating Talent and Culture meetings.
    • Planning and executing the PGIP Interviews for the following year cohort.
    • Social event planning.
    • Administering the Mentor program. 
    • Monitor Internship inbox.
  • Actively participate in the program development process, assisting with the program schedule and curriculum creation, speaker communication, event flow and logistics.
  • On-site execution of program responsibilities including:
    • Managing the working schedule that details daily responsibilities of each staff member during a program.
    • Assisting with the operational and logistical needs of the event. 
    • Facilitating activities, panels and group discussions.
    • Managing speaker and participant communication during event dates.
    • Supporting program administrator, speakers and consultants as needed during program sessions.

IECE Projects

  • Work with Senior Vice President of Inclusion Education and Community Engagement (IECE) for special projects.
