National office streamlines attestation process for members

New webpage houses information on 3 attestations: compliance, campus sexual violence, and diversity, equity and inclusion

The national office is taking steps to streamline the attestation process by introducing a new home for attestation information and centralizing communications. The webpage and communications will help keep members aware of details and deadlines for three attestations: the attestation of compliance; the diversity, equity and inclusion attestation; and the campus sexual violence attestation.

"We consistently hear from members how hard it is to track so many deadlines and reminders about the different attestations they are required to complete," Greg Dana, associate director of academic and membership affairs, said. "The national office hears those frustrations and has taken steps to communicate clearer expectations about the process."

Attestation of compliance

Each school in Divisions I and III, plus Division II schools with programs that compete in Division I sports, must complete the attestation of compliance every year. Presidents/chancellors and athletics directors are required to do this for their school, but first need their school's NCAA MyApps administrators to assign the courses to them in the NCAA Learning Portal.

The deadline to complete the attestation of compliance is Oct. 15.

Content in the learning modules covers the compliance requirements for member schools, collaboration with the NCAA when an issue arises and the importance of creating a culture of compliance on member campuses. There are separate modules for presidents/chancellors and athletics directors.

You can learn more about the attestation of compliance or find more information about the process on the attestation page on ncaa.org.

Diversity, equity and inclusion attestation

Each Division I member school and conference must conduct a diversity, equity and inclusion review every four years. The attestation in the NCAA Learning Portal opens Nov. 1, with the deadline for schools to complete their initial review set for Aug. 1, 2023.

The NCAA office of inclusion recently released a sample framework that shares a suggested structure and questions to ask in a diversity, equity and inclusion review process. It includes questions for a broad-based campus team and prompts schools to remedy self-identified shortfalls through a series of suggested action items.

The sample framework was created at the request of NCAA members and reflects the priorities expressed in the NCAA Board of Governors inclusion statement. It was designed for use by colleges and universities, but the national office is working on a separate resource for conference offices to be published in spring 2023. Conferences must complete their first review by Aug. 1, 2024.

The diversity, equity and inclusion review is not subject to formal NCAA assessment or approval, and it is not required that a member use any specific format to complete a review. Division I has a legislated policy that requires the review for its members. Division II and III schools and conferences are not required to conduct a review once every four years like Division I, but they can use the sample framework as needed.

Campus sexual violence attestation

Every year, all NCAA member schools must complete the requirements set forth in the NCAA Board of Governors Policy on Campus Sexual Violence. Specific information about the policy and the Sexual Violence Prevention Toolkit is on ncaa.org.

In the past, member schools completed this attestation every spring. This summer, the Board of Governors approved moving the campus sexual violence attestation to the fall to correspond with the timing of the other attestations. In fall 2023, while they are completing their attestation of compliance, member schools will also attest that they met the requirements of the policy on preventing campus sexual violence during the 2022-23 school year.

A school's president/chancellor, athletics director and Title IX coordinator must sign the campus sexual violence attestation. Failure to complete the requirements of the policy or to attest will result in the school being unable to enter an individual or team in an NCAA championship in the upcoming academic year.
