The NCAA is Drawing the Line

Draw the Line Against Sports Betting Abuse and Harassment

Sports betting threatens the well-being of student-athletes and the integrity of NCAA competition. Ads are constant, conversations happen across social media and betting markets continue to expand. While betting may attract more fans, it also increases pressure, risks and harassment directed at student-athletes. The NCAA works to protect student-athletes and ensure college sports remain fair, safe and competitive.

The NCAA is proud to Draw the Line against sports betting abuse and harassment with real action to protect student-athletes and competition integrity. The NCAA:

  • Defends the integrity of the game by monitoring more than 22,000 competitions every year.
  • Has provided education to more than 300,000 student-athletes about the dangers of sports betting.
  • Runs the largest surveillance program in the country.
  • Advocates for states to prohibit prop bets.

Competition Integrity

Competition integrity is of the utmost importance to the NCAA. The Association continues to aggressively pursue sports betting violations in college athletics using a layered integrity monitoring program.

  • Monitoring: With the world’s largest global integrity monitoring program, over 22,000 NCAA contests are monitored and over 20,000 officials are screened per year. Additionally, a network of contacts, including federal and state law enforcement officers, gaming operators, campus administrators and specialized vendors, continues to prevent and detect integrity concerns.
  • ProhiBet: Adding another layer to the NCAA’s robust integrity monitoring program, ProhiBet ensures the highest levels of oversight are in place during NCAA championships to monitor officials.
  • Enforcement: The NCAA is committed to identifying integrity concerns and enforcing the bylaws that govern sports betting. Violations of NCAA sports betting rules may result in severe penalties, including permanent loss of remaining athletic eligibility and loss of athletics scholarships, subject to review by divisional reinstatement committees. Integrity issues can arise anywhere in college sports. Coaches, administrators, training staff and campus personnel all play an important role in recognizing potential warning signs and reporting concerns early. Examples of warning signs may include:
    • Student-athletes checking phones during games, including while on the bench.
    • Social media posts showing large amounts of cash.
    • Unexpected injury or illness right before a game.
    • Unusual interest from outsiders asking about injuries, performance, or playing time.

The NCAA encourages campuses to foster environments where student-athletes and staff feel comfortable raising concerns about potential integrity risks.

Anti-harassment

College athletics is no place for harassment, and the NCAA is dedicated to curbing threats and abuse directed to student-athletes. Through collaborations and harassment monitoring, the NCAA is ensuring that college athletics is a space to be supported and celebrated, not targeted and threatened.

  • Signify Group: Providing its Threat Matrix artificial intelligence service, Signify Group supports the Association in studying and responding to online abuse and threats directed at NCAA Championship participants including student-athletes, coaches, officials and committee members. Insights about recent championships show that betting-related harassment often occurs when individuals place bets tied to individual player performance.
  • Venmo Collaboration: With an increasing volume of student-athletes using Venmo, the collaboration created protections for student-athletes on the app, including:
    • A dedicated abuse reporting hotline.
    • A best practices guide for student-athletes.
    • Account support and user education.
  • NCAA E-Learning Module: The NCAA harassment education module helps current and prospective student-athletes recognize online abuse and understand the tools and resources available to prevent and report harassment tied to sports betting activity.
DTL State Advocacy Bubble Icon

State Advocacy

The NCAA advocates for updating existing state sports betting laws and regulations to protect student-athletes from harassment or coercion, address the negative impacts of problem gambling and protect the integrity of NCAA competition.

  • Working with lawmakers: As more states pass or amend laws, the NCAA works with lawmakers to include provisions to protect student-athletes from harassment and threats.
  • Prohibiting prop bets: Prop bets are a major concern as they result in harassment, competition integrity and well-being issues. The NCAA actively and aggressively advocates for the prohibition of these bets in state legislation throughout the country.
  • Successful advocacy: As a result of NCAA advocacy, several states have banned individual student-athlete prop bets. The NCAA continues to work to increase that number for the protection of student-athletes.
