
The Pathway Program is designed to elevate senior-level athletics administrators to the next step as directors of athletics or conference commissioners. This yearlong leadership development program is an intensive, experiential learning opportunity for selected learners who work at an NCAA school or conference in any division.
Since its inception in 1997, the Pathway Program, formerly known as the Fellows Program, has produced more than 300 alumni. In the past five years alone, 26% of program alumni have become athletic directors or conference commissioners, while more than 55% have received promotions.
What You’ll Learn
During the yearlong program, participants examine how values shape leadership philosophy and execution within college athletics and higher education. The curriculum builds practical knowledge in budgeting, strategic planning and fundraising to support both current responsibilities and future roles as directors of athletics.

The Pathway Program begins with a weeklong kickoff session featuring prominent guests, subject matter experts and a highly engaging curriculum. Throughout the year, division-specific programming includes governance meetings, media and interview training, and site visits that provide insight into organizational leadership. Participants also gain exposure to executive search firms and the athletics hiring process.
In addition to in-person programming, each participant is paired with a presidential mentor and a director of athletics mentor for ongoing guidance and professional development.
The program concludes with participant recognition at the annual NACDA convention luncheon.
Eligibility
Applicants must be full-time employees at an NCAA member school or conference office and must have supervisor approval.
Competitive applicants typically demonstrate the following:
- At least eight years of administrative and/or coaching experience in college athletics.
- Service in a senior leadership role with direct reporting responsibility to a director of athletics or conference commissioner.
- Experience overseeing staff, sport programs, development efforts, budgets, coaching operations, or internal and external operations.
- Demonstrated leadership through professional associations or completion of recognized leadership programs, including NCAA/Women Leaders Leadership Enhancement Institute, NACDA, and Minority Opportunities Athletic Association programs.
Cost
The NCAA covers the cost of travel to and from all in-person programming, including hotel accommodations, meals during program sessions and all required materials. Participants also receive an honorarium to support professional development opportunities and mentor visits.
