DI Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee adopts new recruiting calendar

Collaboration with the National Association of Basketball Coaches key to the legislative process

The Division I Men's Basketball Oversight Committee adopted legislation that modifies the recruiting calendar.

Committee members, who met this week at the NCAA Convention in Phoenix, worked collaboratively with the National Association of Basketball Coaches on the legislation, which is effective immediately.

Changes to the recruiting calendar include:

  • Reducing spring nonscholastic evaluation periods from two weekends to one weekend and moving the period to May after the transfer window closes.
  • Extending current dead periods in May and July.
  • Adding Mother's Day, Father's Day and Juneteenth as dead periods.
  • Reducing the number of days for nonscholastic evaluation periods and the NCAA College Basketball Academy.
  • Allowing evaluations of international prospects participating on international teams at regularly scheduled international high school and club team practices, competition, league/cups/tournaments during the academic year recruiting period.
  • Making all academic year international recruiting/evaluation opportunities count toward the limit in recruiting person days (100) and limiting the opportunities per prospective student-athlete per year (7).

No changes were made to the June scholastic evaluation periods and the National Basketball Players Association Top 100 Camp evaluation days.

"The NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Oversight Committee and the National Association of Basketball Coaches conducted a holistic review of the men's basketball recruiting calendar to address the current recruiting environment," said Eddie Nuñez, chair of the MBOC and director of athletics at New Mexico. "We appreciate the work of the coaches in developing comprehensive changes to the recruiting calendar that will benefit the sport for years to come."

The pilot program whereby sport oversight committees can accelerate the legislative process where proposals can be sponsored and adopted within four months helped, as well.

NABC Executive Director Craig Robinson added: "Modernizing the men's basketball recruiting calendar and recruiting legislation was a truly collaborative effort and included input from coaches representing all levels of Division I. The result addresses the impact of the evolving transfer environment and provides coaches with additional time to support their current student-athletes on campus. The NABC is grateful for the Division I Men's Basketball Oversight Committee's eagerness to engage with coaches throughout this process."

Another change to the recruiting rules allows coaches to have contact at a prospective student-athlete's educational institution during the time of day when classes are in session if the school's principal provides permission. This change increases the scholastic influence in the recruiting process and is designed to better support recruits academically.

Finally, June evaluations may now be conducted at approved scholastic and intercollegiate events that occur at any location other than an NCAA Division I school.
