Division III awards 26 diversity grants to members

The NCAA awarded more than $800,000 for the 2016-17 academic year to 26 Division III members to encourage access, recruitment, selection and the long-term success of ethnic minorities and women in athletics administration and assistant coaching. Through two diversity grant programs, recipients are selected annually in March by committees of their peers after a review of proposals that were submitted in January.

Survey: Ethnic minority women in college sports need more opportunities

Respondents to an NCAA survey of ethnic minority women in college coaching and sports administration indicated concern and frustration about opportunities available to them in their careers. In the study, titled “Perceived Barriers for Ethnic Minority Females in Collegiate Athletics Careers,” almost all respondents agreed there are qualified ethnic minority women and men who don’t apply for jobs because of hiring perceptions and perceived barriers. Ethnic minority females account for fewer than 7 percent of the athletics professionals at NCAA member schools in all three divisions.

Northern Illinois University’s athletics department has earned the NCAA and Minority Opportunities Athletic Association’s 2016 Award for Diversity and Inclusion. The department will receive the honor at the NCAA Convention in January in San Antonio.

Longtime leader in women’s sports recognized by NCAA committee

An NCAA committee is recognizing the leader of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators as an individual who has worked to support the interests of ethnic minorities and other underrepresented populations.
