How I scored my job in auditing

Former Albion football player’s path to EY started in college

My job search started during my freshman year at Albion, when I connected with the EY recruiters at a campus job fair. As a center on the football team, I developed leadership and workplace-ready skills quickly. This caught the attention of EY’s recruiters throughout my student-athlete career.

During my sophomore year, I participated in EY’s emerging leaders program — an interactive learning experience that introduced me to the company’s culture, people and service lines. It also served as a relationship building block, opening doors for me at the multinational company.

I spent the spring semester of my junior year off campus working as a full-time audit intern at EY’s Detroit office. Coming off a busy fall term, it was hard not being around my teammates and training as much as I would have liked, but it helped knowing my coaches supported my time away from football. As players, it was always evident to us that our careers were ultimately on the line in college; football had to come second.

My internship fell during the audit department’s busiest time of the year: January and February. I was used to working hard and, because of football, I was immediately comfortable in EY’s team environment.

At EY, we’re always collaborating, asking questions, and adjusting along the way. It’s like football — after every drive, you communicate with your teammates and coaches, adjust and get ready for the next drive. Every day is a new challenge, and the experiences I have had playing college football have helped me greatly in my new role at EY.
