Saint Augustine captures No. 14

2015 Division II Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

The Saint Augustine’s University 4x400 meter relay team had been training diligently all year in hopes of raising the national championship trophy yet again. But the relay team, long a cornerstone of Saint Augustine’s success, was disqualified during the preliminary rounds at this year’s national championship meet. For head coach George Williams, the absence of this important piece of the puzzle posed a major problem.

“This is the first time I’ve ever been without a 4x400 meter relay team,” Williams told “It’s always been my key to a win. I usually win by one point or two points, and my 4x400 team is usually why.”

Despite starting at a disadvantage, the Falcons were able to squeak by to win the national championship May 23 at the Grand Valley State University Track and Field Complex, only three points ahead of second-place finisher University of Findlay. The championship marks the 14th outdoor men’s title for Williams.

“It means a lot,” senior JaQuan Demiel said to “All that we went through … all the hard work, it comes together in the end. This is what counts, right here.”
