"My art will make me a better physician."

When Megan Stuart tells people about her two majors at South Dakota State University, she receives a common reaction. “Art and biology?” people say. “That’s an interesting combination.” But in the eyes of Stuart, a senior on the basketball team, her two passions go hand in hand. She found the perfect marriage of art and science in an internship last summer at the Sanford Children’s Hospital and the Sanford Cancer Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Stuart led art therapy projects – from painting to molding clay to paper-folding – for children with illnesses and cancer patients of all ages. “Art is a form of healing in a way that sometimes medicine can’t do,” Stuart said. So, which passion will she pursue post-college? Medical school is the plan for now, though Stuart is quick to add: “I will definitely keep art in my life.”
