Important steps taken toward implementing more robust version of Division III University

An educational resource for coaches and administrators — Division III University — launched in December, designed to mirror a similar program adopted by Division II in spring 2018.  

It includes modules with information on how the NCAA functions, the student-athlete reinstatement process, and vital health and safety topics such as mental health. The lessons are often interactive and typically require about eight minutes to complete.  

In coming months, access to Division III University will expand to other constituent groups, such as compliance administrators and athletic trainers. 

In February, the Division III Interpretations and Legislation Committee discussed the viability of expanding the program so it might more closely mirror Division II’s version, which now includes more than two dozen compliance training modules. To start, the committee recommended the program focus on educating coaches, with an emphasis on compliance in areas such as eligibility, recruiting and communication. The committee felt identifying roughly 10 modules to address those topics, and a mechanism for ensuring that coaches use the available materials, would be an important next step for the program.  

The Division III Strategic Planning and Finance Committee has recommended funding to expand the program — each module will cost an estimated $3,000-$5,000 to develop. The Division III Management Council and Presidents Council will consider this recommendation during their spring meetings. Enhancing the program also will require additional administrative and personnel expenses.  

“The additional modules will allow coaches and Division III members the opportunity to review the compliance materials while being able to revisit the videos as often as they like, share the short videos with student-athletes, and allow greater discussion for conferences and institutions about specific compliance areas,” says Angie Morenz, committee chair and dean of work at Blackburn.
