"I’m not a dream stealer. I’m a realist."

For more than two decades, Greg Goings has juggled his day job as a sports information director with his role as a men’s basketball on-court official at the NCAA, junior college and high school levels. It’s an unusual double-double because both professions are time-consuming, but they also offered Goings – who has been a sports information director at Bowie State University the past 11 years and  who previously worked at Virginia State University – a chance to pursue both passions. “I’ve been blessed to have athletics directors who have completely understood what it was all about,” Goings said. “I would never sacrifice my mortgage-paying job for officiating assignments, but when the opportunities are there, they allowed me to go.” As a referee, Goings gets to manage how the game is played. As an athletics administrator, he gets to help manage the direction young people take later in life. “I’m that kind of a person,” he said. “I’m not a dream stealer. I’m a realist. I want the student-athletes to think about what they can do outside of sports.”
