"The adjustment wasn’t too hard."

To say Maria Hauer of St. Cloud State University was busy during her freshman year would be an understatement. Hauer, who was born deaf but can now hear at a 60-80 percent level after seven surgeries early in her life, competed for the Huskies’ cross country team in the fall, the Nordic ski team in the winter and ran the 800-meter and the 1,600-meter relay for the track team in the spring. She also dabbles in music, playing the violin, piano, baritone, trombone and the clarinet, while majoring in accounting. “I used Post-it notes so I wouldn’t forget assignments, presentations or due dates on my papers,” Hauer said. And which sport is her favorite? The answer, she says, changes with the season.
