Presidents and chancellors — Ray M. Keck was named permanent president of Texas A&M-Commerce after serving as interim president since June … B. James Dawson will retire as president of Lincoln Memorial at the end of the academic year.

Athletics directors —Thomas M. Brennan, who spent the past 16 years as the director of athletics at La Salle, was hired as athletics director at Goldey-Beacom … Anton Goff was named director of athletics at St. John’s (New York). Goff most recently was director of athletics at Hartford. John Carson, senior advisor to the president for university relations, will take over as Hartford’s interim director of athletics.


Beach volleyball and men’s and women’s volleyball — Lindenwood women’s head coach Ron Young is retiring. Young recently completed his 15th season as the head coach of the women's program at Lindenwood. Young was also head coach of Lindenwood’s men’s volleyball program from 2001 to 2013 … East Stroudsburg’s Allison Keeley will not return as women’s head coach after five seasons in the position.

Field hockey — Converse hired Kelsey Lovelace ​as head coach of ​its new program. Lovelace spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Limestone.

Football — Carson-Newman head coach Ken Sparks is retiring. Sparks finishes his career after 37 seasons, 338 wins, 99 losses and two ties. His career winning percentage of .772 is the fourth highest in college football history, and his 338 wins top the list of victories by an active coach. Carson-Newman offensive coordinator and alumnus Mike Turner was named head coach. Turner took command of the Eagles offense in 1995 … Tom Kearly announced his retirement after wrapping up his 11th season as head coach at Michigan Tech. Kearly compiled a record of 70-44 during that time. Defensive coordinator Steve Olson was selected as head coach at Michigan Tech. He has been on the Michigan Tech coaching staff for six seasons … Lindenwood will not retain head coach Patrick Ross.

Men’s and women’s soccer — Scott Grzenda, the only head coach in the history of the Delaware women’s team, resigned after 27 seasons in the post.

Men’s and women’s tennis — Johnson C. Smith hired Ramona Staton to lead the women’s team and Timothy Hunter to lead the men’s team. Staton previously was head women’s coach at Queens (North Carolina) from 2005 to 2007. Hunter is a 2005 Johnson C. Smith graduate who played tennis for the Golden Bulls. He has provided training to beginners and intermediate players with the Mecklenburg Parks and Recreation Department, as well as serving as a private tennis instructor.


David W. Adamany, a former president of both Temple and Wayne State (Michigan), died Nov. 10. He was 80.

November 18

Presidents and chancellors - Minnesota-Crookston Chancellor Fred Wood is stepping down to become chancellor at Contra Costa Community College District in California. He's an alum of the college.

Athletics directors - Midwestern State announced Kyle Williams will be interim athletics director. Williams served the past 10 years first as director of corporate and sports development and later as associate athletics director for development. He takes over for Charlie Carr, who announced his retirement following a 10-year run as athletics director … John Cohen was named Mississippi State's director of athletics. Cohen has spent more than two decades coaching college baseball and has been the head baseball coach at Mississippi State since 2009.

Assistant athletics directors - Utah State added Andrew Dickinson as assistant athletics director for major gifts.


Men's and women's cross country and track and field - Mark Dutro resigned after five years as head coach of the Fort Lewis men's and women's cross country programs and three years as head coach of women's track and field.

Football - Alderson Broaddus head coach and Athletics Director Dennis Creehan announced that 2016 will be his final season as head coach, but he will remain the athletics director. Creehan had been head coach for four seasons.

Men's and women's lacrosse staff - Bob Lewis Jr. and Stephanie Linder have been named assistant women's coaches at Felician.

Men's and women's soccer - After six seasons of directing the Lee men's program, head coach Paul Furey resigned … Glenville State hired Eric Belcher as head coach of the women's team. Belcher previously was the assistant men's coach at Salem International … After 21 years at the helm of the Franklin Pierce women's team, head coach Jeff Bailey is departing the university to pursue other opportunities. Bailey guided the Ravens to three national titles, 11 conference titles and 15 NCAA championship berths.

Men's and women's tennis - Montevallo women's tennis coach Adam Albertsen will coach the university's men's tennis team, which the school will reinstate in spring 2018. Montevallo last had a men's tennis team in 1980.


Eric Ziady was hired as chief financial officer of the American Athletic Conference. Ziady most recently served as director of intercollegiate athletics and recreation services at Delaware from 2012 to 2015.


Merlin Morrow, 79, former director of athletics at Hardin-Simmons, died Sept. 21. Morrow was the director of athletics at Hardin-Simmons when the school made the transition from NCAA Division I to NCAA Division III … Gerald Adams, who retired in September after 25 years as director of Appalachian State's Yosef Club and was known as "Mr. Yosef," died Nov. 9 at age 84. Adams played football while a student at Appalachian State in the 1950s.

Athletics directors — College of Charleston appointed Matt Roberts as director of athletics. Roberts most recently served as deputy director of athletics at SMU … Lori Mazza was named director of athletics at Western Connecticut State. Mazza has been the associate vice president of championships, leagues and affiliates and senior woman administrator for the Eastern College Athletic Conference since 2015 … Matt Roberts, deputy director of athletics at SMU, was named director of athletics for the College of Charleston … After 39 years with South Carolina Aiken, Randy Warrick plans to step down as athletics director at the end of the school year. Warrick, who was named athletics director in 1985, also served as baseball coach at the university.

Associate athletics directors — Providence promoted Kyle Murphy to associate athletics director for men’s and women’s hockey/Schneider Arena … North Carolina Central hired Jamaal Mayo as associate athletics director for development. Mayo worked last year as director of athletics at Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis … Erica Aresco has been named Columbia’s associate athletics director/chief financial officer. Aresco previously worked at The Washington Post, where she was responsible for revenue and forecasting for all print and digital circulation.

Assistant athletics director — Seattle Pacific named Shelby Stueve assistant athletics director for compliance. Stueve most recently held the compliance director's position at Azusa Pacific … Colorado School of Mines promoted administrative assistant Carolyn Dennee to assistant athletics director for internal operations.


Men’s basketball — Nova Southeastern head coach Gary Tuell will step down at the conclusion of the 2016-17 season, which will mark Tuell's 30th year as a collegiate head coach and 13th season with Nova Southeastern.

Women’s basketball — Cheyney hired Tammy A. Bagby as head coach. Bagby, who most recently was an assistant at Jackson State, has also worked as an assistant coach for the WNBA’s Tulsa Shock.

Beach volleyball and men’s and women’s volleyball — Paul Jacoby announced his retirement as head coach of the women’s team at Ohio Valley after 21 years in the position.

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field — Texas A&M-Commerce named George Pincock interim head coach for the men’s and women’s track and field and cross country teams. Pincock, who joined the program a year ago as an assistant coach, replaces Ross Smithey, who stepped down to pursue another career opportunity.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse — Southern New Hampshire hired Kathryn Beall as head coach of the women’s program. Beall spent the past two seasons as head women’s coach at Nichols … Holy Family named Tracy Zimmer head coach of its women’s team. Zimmer most recently has been assistant strength and conditioning coach at Pennsylvania … Southern Wesleyan hired Lindsey Schneider as head coach of its women's team, which will start competing in the 2017-2018 school year. Schneider comes to Southern Wesleyan from North Greenville, where she has served as an assistant coach for the past year … Wilmington (Ohio) named Bryan Habick head coach of the men’s team. Habick previously served as assistant coach at Washington and Jefferson.

Women’s rowing — Assistant coach Montia Rice was promoted to head coach at Central Oklahoma.

Men’s and women’s soccer — Shenandoah announced Corbin Sutton will not continue as head coach of its men’s program. Sutton led the Hornets for six seasons … Wojtek Krakowiak, head coach of the Montana State Billings women’s team, resigned. Krakowiak had a record of 53-38-14 in six seasons with the Yellowjackets. Assistant coach Stephen Cavallo was named interim coach … Nichole Ridenour resigned as head coach of the women’s team at Colorado-Colorado Springs.


The Heartland Conference promoted Leslie Schuemann from associate commissioner to senior associate commissioner.

November 4

Presidents and chancellors - Lenoir-Rhyne named Frederick K. Whitt president. Whitt is the founding dean of the Beaver College of Health Sciences at Appalachian State, a position he has held since 2010 … Maria C. Rose announced plans to retire as president of Fairmont State when her contract ends June 30. Rose has been the university's president since 2012.

Athletics directors - John David Wicker was named San Diego State's director of intercollegiate athletics. Wicker was San Diego State's deputy athletics director from 2011 until he left to become a senior associate athletics director at Georgia Tech in July 2015 … UNLV Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tina Kunzer-Murphy will transition to a new position, focused primarily on fundraising, with the UNLV Foundation beginning July 1 … Scott Wetherbee, Mississippi State's senior associate director of athletics for external affairs, was named the university's interim director of athletics.

Assistant athletics directors - LaMar "Soup" Campbell has been named assistant athletics director for student-athlete engagement at Wisconsin. Campbell, who played football for the Badgers as a student, most recently was the Big Ten minority intern in the office of student-athlete development … Matt Pohren has been named assistant athletics director for external operations at Sioux Falls … Cal State Monterey Bay appointed Channing Kimball as assistant athletics director for student success and senior woman administrator. Kimball most recently served as the diving coach at Denver.


Muskingum appointed Tom Caudill as director of athletics communication and assistant professor of the new athletics communication major. Caudill previously served as sports information director at Muskingum.


Men's basketball - After 32 years as head coach at Western Connecticut State, Bob Campbell is retiring. Jason Harlow, a former player and assistant coach for Campbell, will take the reins as interim head coach.

Beach volleyball and men's and women's volleyball - Sarah Lawrence named John Chang head coach of the men's team. Chang will continue to serve as coach of Felician's women's team, a post he has held since 2014.

Football - Fresno State announced that Tim DeRuyter has been relieved of his duties as head coach. Offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau was named interim head coach.

Men's and women's lacrosse - Kirk Rogers has stepped down as head coach of the Young Harris men's team. Rogers started the men's and women's programs when he was hired as director of lacrosse in 2012. Forrest MacConnell, assistant coach for the past three seasons, will serve as interim head coach of the men's program this year.


Nathan Salant, former commissioner of the Gulf South and Middle Atlantic conferences, was named commissioner of the California Collegiate Athletic Association … The Southland Conference selected John Payne as assistant director for financial operations.


Bob Vanatta, a longtime basketball coach, athletics director and conference commissioner, died Oct. 22 at age 98. Vanatta coached at Missouri State, Missouri, Memphis, Army West Point, Bradley and Delta State, was commissioner of three different conferences and served as director of athletics at Oral Roberts and Louisiana Tech.
