Presidents and chancellors — Christopher Ames, provost at Shepherd, was named president of The Sage Colleges. Ames will assume his post July 1 … University of Texas at San Antonio President Ricardo Romo is retiring. Pedro Reyes has been named interim president … Cheryl B. Schrader, chancellor of Missouri S&T, was named president of Wright State. She will be the first woman to lead the school … Ohio Dominican announced that Robert A. Gervasi will succeed Peter Cimbolic as university president. Cimbolic is retiring after seven years in the post … Elliot Hirshman was named Stevenson president. Hirshman, who will take his new post July 1, has served as president of San Diego State since 2011 … Carol Christ was confirmed as California’s chancellor. Christ, who will assume her post in July, started at California in 1970 and has served in a wide range of leadership roles, rising from English department chair to executive vice chancellor and provost. She served as president at Smith from 2002 to 2013 before returning to Berkeley in 2015 … Christopher Brown was elected to serve as Kentucky State’s president. Brown is currently the executive vice president for academic affairs and provost at Southern University … Iowa State President Steven Leath will become Auburn’s president. Leath starts July 15 … Tracy L. Pellett, currently the provost and vice president for academic affairs at the College of Coastal Georgia in Brunswick, Georgia, has been selected to serve as president of Glenville State … Wright State President David R. Hopkins has decided to step down as president ahead of his scheduled retirement June 30. Curtis L. McCray has been appointed interim president until President-designate Cheryl B. Schrader takes over.

Athletics directors — Jason Doviak was named athletics director at Alfred State. Doviak spent the past 12 years at Salem State, most recently as senior associate director of athletics and recreation … St. Scholastica Athletics Director Don Olson will retire from his position at the end of the 2016-17 academic year but will remain with the college in an advisory role for the school’s strategic planning process. Olson took the post at St. Scholastica in 2008 … William & Mary appointed Samantha K. Huge as director of athletics, effective May 1. Huge is currently the senior associate director of athletics at Texas A&M … Brian Wall was named athletics director at Colorado Christian. Wall has served as superintendent of Faith Christian Academy, a Christian high school based in Arvada, Colorado … Heather Lyke has been named athletics director at Pittsburgh. Lyke has served as vice president and director of athletics at Eastern Michigan since 2013.

Associate athletics directors — Troy added Brent Jones and Kyle George to its staff. Jones, who most recently was senior associate athletics director for external affairs at Southern Mississippi, will serve as deputy director of athletics for external operations. George was named associate athletics director for marketing and sales at Troy. He most recently served as associate athletics director for marketing and communications at Southern Mississippi … Louisiana Tech hired Mark Wagner as associate athletics director and chief financial officer. Wagner previously was director of business operations and athletics business services coordinator at North Carolina-Greensboro … San Diego hired Marcy Lanoue as senior associate director of athletics for external affairs and Tyler Mariucci as senior associate director of athletics for development … Suzette Mauney has been promoted to assistant athletics director for development at Appalachian State.

Assistant athletics directors — Jacob Kirkham was added to the Oregon State staff as assistant athletics director, major gifts-development. Kirkham moved to Oregon State after nearly three years as a major gift officer for West Virginia athletics.


Baseball — Jack McDowell, a former Major League Baseball player who competed as a pitcher for 12 years with the White Sox, Yankees, Indians and Angels, was named head coach of a newly added team at Queens (North Carolina). Queens will compete as a club team during the traditional spring season of 2018 before becoming a Division II sponsored sport the next season.

Men’s basketball — Missouri appointed Cuonzo Martin as head coach. Martin, who spent the past three seasons as head coach at California, has averaged 20.7 wins in nine seasons of coaching. Missouri asked third-year head coach Kim Anderson to step down at the end of the season … After 27 years, Dave Loos announced his retirement as Austin Peay State head coach. He tallied his 500th career win earlier this year … Grant McCasland was hired as head coach at North Texas. McCasland led Arkansas State to a 20-win season in his first year as coach of the Red Wolves. He was an assistant coach at Baylor for five years before Arkansas State. McCasland replaces Tony Benford, who was relieved of his duties after five years as head coach at North Texas. Arkansas State hired Louisville assistant Mike Balado as head coach … Illinois relieved John Groce of his head coaching duties after five years in the position. Brad Underwood, head coach at Oklahoma State, was named head coach for the Fighting Illini … After six seasons, Mike Jones resigned as head coach at Tusculum … Quinnipiac head coach Tom Moore has been relieved of his duties after 10 years in the post … Youngstown State head coach Jerry Slocum is retiring after 42 years on the bench, including the past 12 at Youngstown State. Slocum amassed 723 career victories while coaching at Youngstown State, Gannon, Geneva and Nyack … Gary Waters, the all-time leader in wins at Cleveland State, announced his retirement as head coach after 11 seasons with the Vikings … Alabama A&M head coach Willie Hayes resigned after six years as head coach. Hayes, who played at Alabama A&M, also served as a longtime assistant coach for the Bulldogs … LSU dismissed coach Johnny Jones … After seven seasons as head coach at Pittsburg State, Kevin Muff has resigned … Shenandoah will not issue a new contract to head coach Rob Pryor, who recently completed his sixth season … Indiana dismissed head coach Tom Crean. Crean, who spent nine seasons at Indiana, led the Hoosiers to two outright Big Ten titles in the past five years … Massachusetts announced that head coach Derek Kellogg has been relieved of his duties after nine seasons leading the program … Miami (Ohio) is not renewing the contract of head coach John Cooper … Duquesne announced Jim Ferry will not be retained as head coach … After eight seasons as Seattle head coach, Cameron Dollar will not return for the 2017-18 season … South Florida appointed Brian Gregory as head coach. Gregory, who is currently an assistant at Michigan State, previously led programs at Georgia Tech and Dayton … Longtime Syracuse assistant Mike Hopkins was named head coach at Washington. Hopkins spent 22 seasons at Syracuse and was named head coach designate in 2015 to take over the Orange program after the 2017-18 season. Hopkins replaces Lorenzo Romar, who spent 15 seasons at the helm of the Huskies program … Preston Spradlin, who spent most of the 2016-17 season as interim head coach at Morehead State, was named head coach of the program. Spradlin just concluded his third season with the team … Portland State announced that Tyler Geving, head coach of the Vikings for the past eight seasons, will not return for the 2017-18 season … North Carolina State named Kevin Keatts as head coach. Keatts had a 72-28 record in three years at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. UNCW assistant Takayo Siddle was named interim head coach for the Seahawks … Scott McClary has announced his resignation after eight years as head coach at Muhlenberg.

Women’s basketball Florida announced that Amanda Butler will not continue as head coach next season. Butler coached the Gators to 190 victories in 10 years … Kellie Lewis-Jay has been relieved of her duties as Florida Atlantic head coach. Lewis-Jay took over the program in May 2012 … Southern California head coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke has resigned. Cooper-Dyke posted a 70-57 record in four seasons with the Women of Troy … Arkansas head coach Jimmy Dykes stepped down after three seasons … Eastern Illinois will not renew the contract of head coach Debbie Black. Black served four seasons as the Panthers head coach … Grand Canyon has decided not to retain Trent May as head coach. In 10 seasons with the university, May compiled a 195-96 overall record … Alaska Fairbanks head coach Cody Bench resigned after leading the Nanooks for seven seasons … Tennessee State head coach Larry Joe Inman resigned, citing personal reasons. Inman, who spent the past five seasons in the post, led the Lady Tigers to an Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship in 2015 … Miami (Ohio) is relieving head coach Cleve Wright of his duties … Errol Gauff resigned as head coach at Southeastern Louisiana due to ongoing health concerns. Assistant coach Ayla Guzzardo was named acting head coach … Ryan Weisenberg was relieved of his duties after four years as head coach at Pepperdine. He will remain available to assist the director of athletics with special projects … Michele Savage was dismissed as head coach at Davidson, where she has coached since 2010 … Head coach Daron Park and Cal State Fullerton mutually decided to part ways. Park was hired as Fullerton’s coach in 2013 … Marshall head coach Matt Daniel resigned. In five seasons, Daniel posted 71 wins. Associate head coach Tony Kemper was promoted to head coach. Kemper has been with the Thundering Herd for five seasons … Hillsdale did not renew the contract of head coach Todd Mitmesser, who coached the program for the past two seasons … Illinois head coach Matt Bollant has been relieved of his duties … University of Missouri-Kansas City announced that Marsha Frese will be relieved of her duties after five seasons as head coach … Post promoted assistant coach Jon Plefka to head coach … John Bonner was named head coach at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Bonner served as interim coach during the 2016-17 season.

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field Dave Coppock, who has been the head men’s and women’s cross country coach at Montana State Billings since 1989, announced he will retire at the end of the 2016-17 academic year. Coppock also has served as head men’s and women’s track and field coach since the program’s reintroduction in 2007.

Football — Alderson Broaddus hired Salvatore Dewalt as head coach. Dewalt has spent the past three seasons as the offensive line coach and the director of football operations … Albany State (Georgia) announced the resignation of head coach Dan Land. Land, who served as coach in an interim role before being named head coach last June, will remain on faculty. Anthony Kelly, an assistant with the program for 27 seasons, was named interim coach. 

Football assistants Delaware hired Mike Brown, Austin Gund and Wes Reber as quality control assistants … Wayne State (Michigan) named Lou West co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach and promoted Scott Kazmierski to co-defensive coordinator … Holy Cross added Lloyd Lee as outside linebackers coach … Massachusetts hired Dave Wissman as a defensive line coach and Ed Pinkham as defense coordinator … Appalachian State promoted Scot Sloan to co-defensive coordinator … Jason Nichols, a former record-setting receiver for East Carolina, has been named running backs coach for the Pirates.

Men’s and women’s golf assistants — Delaware announced that Emma Sills has joined the women’s program as a volunteer assistant coach. Sills, who played golf for Delaware, graduated in 2016.

Men’s and women’s ice hockey — Rensselaer men’s coach Seth Appert has been relieved of his duties … Dave Burkholder will not return as head coach of the Niagara men’s team. Burkholder has been coach at Niagara since 2001 … Omaha men’s coach Dean Blais is stepping down. In eight seasons as Omaha’s head coach, Blais compiled a record of 146-133-30 and led the Mavericks to the 2015 Frozen Four … New Hampshire head men’s coach Dick Umile has announced he will retire after the 2017-18 season. Associate head coach Mike Souza will become head coach at that time. Umile just completed his 27th season as head coach.

Men’s and women’s soccer Lake Erie hired Louie Rolko as head men’s coach. Rolko served close to 10 years on staff at his alma mater, Baldwin Wallace, most recently as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for the men’s program and senior assistant coach for the women’s program … Darren Leslie was named head men’s coach at Cal State San Bernardino. As interim coach this season, Leslie led the Coyotes to their first 10-win season in six years … Wayne State (Nebraska) promoted Joe Cleary to head coach of the women’s program. Cleary has spent the last two years as an assistant coach … After six seasons as head men’s coach of his alma mater, Tom Drummond is resigning from Delaware Valley … Mario Rincon was hired as head coach of the Saint Leo women’s team. Rincon spent the past five seasons as an assistant at Arkansas … Eastern Nazarene hired George Arroyo Jr. as head women’s coach. Arroyo spent five years as head coach at Warner University in Lake Wales, Florida.

Men’s and women’s soccer assistants — Mike Shenigo, who spent the past four seasons as head women’s coach at Guilford, joined the Delaware women’s soccer coaching staff as an assistant … Appalachian State added Daniel Louisignau and Shaun Utterson as assistant coaches for the men’s team.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving After six seasons as Adams State swimming coach, Dan France has resigned. France was hired in the spring of 2011. This past season his efforts focused solely on the women’s team after the men’s program was discontinued following the 2015-16 campaign … Longtime West Chester men’s and women’s coach Jamie Rudisill will retire in August after 29 years leading the Golden Rams. West Chester’s men’s teams have won the past 19 straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference titles while the women have won the past 11 PSAC titles and 14 of the past 16 … Roberts Wesleyan hired Sara Smith as head coach of the new men’s and women’s programs. Smith previously served as head coach and program director for Marlins Swimming Inc., a nonprofit youth swimming organization … Seton Hall men’s and women’s head coach Ron Farina has decided to step down to pursue new opportunities after leading the Pirates for 17 years … Wheaton (Illinois) hired Jacob Ayers as head men’s coach and aquatics director and Meghan (Daly) Ayers as head women’s coach.

Beach volleyball and men’s and women’s volleyball — Hugh Hernesman will not return as head coach of the Clemson women’s team for the 2017 season … Mike Lozier was announced as head coach of Northern Michigan’s women’s team. Lozier spent the past three seasons as assistant coach at Wayne State (Michigan) … Merrimack promoted Jeff Costa to head coach of the women’s team. Costa joined the program in 2015 as assistant coach … Shauna Hurles was promoted to head women’s coach at Tiffin. Hurles recently completed her second season as an assistant coach with the Dragons … Gene Krieger has been named head coach of the women’s team at Hawaii Hilo. He most recently was head coach at Anderson (South Carolina) … Lake Superior State hired Dave Schmidlin as head coach of the women’s team. Schmidlin previously was head coach of the men’s and women’s teams at Lees-McRae … Jim Moore is stepping down as head coach of the women’s team at Oregon effective immediately. Moore will work on a transition plan and will retire from the university as of May 15. Associate head coach Matt Ulmer was named interim head coach … Nikki Naccarato was named head coach of the Maryville (Missouri) women’s program. She has coached the past two years at Regis (Massachusetts) … Wheaton (Illinois) hired Stephanie Schmidt as head coach of the women’s program. Schmidt spent the past five seasons as head women’s coach at North Central (Minnesota) … Former Macalester student-athlete and assistant coach Sarah Graves has been hired as head women’s coach for the Scots. Graves spent the past two seasons as head coach at Denison.

Wrestling — Olympian Ken Chertow was named head coach of the new program at Queens (North Carolina). Currently, Chertow is the coordinator and owner of Ken Chertow’s Gold Medal Training Camp System. 


Actor Neil Fingleton, a 2004 graduate and basketball player for Holy Cross, died Feb. 25 at age 36. The 7-foot-8 history major, who transferred to Holy Cross from North Carolina in 2002, played center for the Crusaders and later played professionally in Europe before a back injury ended his basketball career. As an actor, Fingleton was known for his roles in “Game of Thrones,” “Doctor Who” and “X-Men: First Class” …  Ben Jobe, a college men’s basketball coach for 31 years, died March 10 at age 84. Jobe coached at Southern University, Tuskegee, Alabama A&M, Denver, South Carolina State, Alabama State and Talladega College, compiling a 524-334 record. Most recently, he served as a scout for the New York Knicks … Lindenwood men's lacrosse player Isaiah Kozak died March 7 at the age of 20. Kozak, a sophomore, appeared in six games and scored three goals. He was a member of the Eastern College Athletic Conference All-Academic team in 2016 … Missouri State freshman golfer Sam Holmes died March 17 at age 19 … Bill Cooper, former equipment manager at Delaware, died March 7 at age 80 after a brief illness. “Coop,” as he was affectionately known to hundreds of Blue Hen student-athletes, joined the Delaware staff as an assistant to Lun Thompson in 1966 and retired in 1998 after 32 years of service, most of them as the head equipment manager.

Presidents and chancellors — Augustana (South Dakota) selected former U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin as the first female president of the university. Sandlin, who represented South Dakota in Congress from 2004 to 2011, most recently was general counsel and vice president of corporate development for Raven Industries in Sioux Falls, South Dakota … North Greenville named Gene C. Fant Jr. as its next president. Fant will complete the spring semester in his current role as the provost and chief academic officer at Palm Beach Atlantic, assuming his duties at North Greenville on June 1 … Monmouth announced the retirement of President Paul R. Brown, who joined the university in 2013. Grey J. Dimenna, former vice president and general counsel, will serve as interim president … Tusculum President Nancy B. Moody will retire at the end of 2017. Moody, the school’s first female president, has held the post since 2009 … Michael Martin was selected as president-elect of Florida Gulf Coast, contingent on a contract negotiation and confirmation by the Florida Board of Governors. Martin was the chancellor of the Colorado State University system from 2012 to 2015 and chancellor of LSU from 2008 to 2012. Previously, he was president of New Mexico State from 2004 to 2008.

Athletics directors — Auburn Montgomery named Jessie Rosa director of athletics. Rosa, an Auburn Montgomery graduate and former student-athlete, previously served as the department's associate athletics director and senior woman administrator. Most recently, she filled in as interim athletics director … Dave Heeke was named Arizona’s vice president for athletics, pending approval of the contract by the Arizona Board of Regents. Heeke served for the past 11 years as athletics director at Central Michigan … Kansas State Athletics Director John Currie was named Tennessee’s new vice chancellor and director of athletics. Before taking his post at Kansas State in 2009, Currie served in Tennessee’s athletics department in various capacities from 1997 to 2009, including as associate athletics director. Deputy Athletics Director Laird Veatch was named interim athletics director at Kansas State … Franciscan hired Mike Holmes as director of athletics. Holmes most recently spent three years at Maine-Presque Isle, where he served as the athletics director and head men’s basketball coach.

Associate athletics directors — Delaware hired Kallie Knop for the new position of associate athletics director for communications and digital strategy … David C. Leach was named senior associate athletics director for recreation and wellness at Pennsylvania. Leach spent the past four years as senior associate athletics director for campus recreation at Princeton … Bucknell appointed Ian Wood as associate athletics director for sports medicine … Baylor named Doug McNamee senior associate athletics director for external relations. McNamee, a 2003 graduate of Baylor, most recently was senior associate athletics director for development with the Baylor Bear Foundation … West Virginia named alumnus Kevin Miller as associate athletics director for major gifts and capital campaigns. Miller most recently served as assistant athletics director at Georgia State.

Assistant athletics directors — Austin Peay State added Mike Minyard as assistant director of athletics for external affairs … Stephen Foshee begins as assistant athletics director for development at Mississippi State … Central Washington appointed Keith Champagne to serve as assistant athletics director for inclusivity and diversity. Since 2011, Champagne has been associate dean for student development.


Women’s basketball — Murray State announced Rob Cross will not return for a 10th season as head coach … Saint Martin’s head coach Tim Healy is retiring after serving 22 years in the position … Longtime Minot State head coach Sheila Green Gerding announced she is stepping down after 22 years to spend more time with family … After 18 seasons as head coach at Northeastern State, Randy Gipson is retiring from coaching … Jane Albright, head coach at Nevada, announced her retirement. Albright has guided the Wolf Pack to 115 wins in nine years and has amassed more than 500 wins in 33 years of coaching in Division I.

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field — Joshua Coon, a 2007 graduate of Fort Lewis, was named head men’s and women’s cross country coach and head women’s track and field coach at his alma mater. Coon coached the Colorado Christian men’s and women’s cross country programs from 2012 to 2015 and helped start Colorado Christian’s track and field team.

Field hockey assistants — Hofstra appointed Courtney Veinotte as the Pride’s associate head coach. Veinotte had been associate coach for Maine.

Football — Curt Mallory was named head coach at Indiana State. Mallory has 22 years of experience as an assistant college coach.<

Football assistants — The University of Texas at San Antonio hired Bo Davis as defensive line coach. Davis is a former defensive line coach at Alabama and Texas and in the NFL … Holy Cross added Anthony DiMichele to its coaching staff as an assistant for the defense. Holy Cross also hired Brian Vaganek as linebackers coach. Vaganek served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at New Haven and has over 20 years of collegiate experience.

Men’s and women’s golf — Steve Malkowski will be head coach of Wesley’s new women’s team, which the college is adding beginning with the 2017-18 academic year. Malkowski, a 1983 Wesley graduate, has been an assistant at Dover High School in Delaware for the past 14 years. In addition, Rick McCall Jr. will succeed his father, Rick McCall, as head men’s coach. The elder McCall is retiring after the spring season. The younger McCall is currently the head golf professional at Wild Quail Golf and Country Club in Wyoming, Delaware, and has been the assistant golf coach at Wesley since 2002.

Men’s and women’s gymnastics — Jeff Thompson was relieved of his duties as head coach of the Penn State women’s team. Thompson was in his seventh year as head coach. Assistant coaches Kera Molinaro and Josh Nilson were named interim co-head coaches for the remainder of the season.

Lacrosse assistants — William Smith hired Robyn Carroll as a part-time assistant coach. Carroll graduated in January from SUNY Canton, where she was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

Men’s and women’s soccer — Radford men’s head coach Marc Reeves resigned to take the same position at Elon. Reeves was head coach of the Highlanders for seven seasons, compiling a 75-43-20 overall record … Dwight Hornibrook was named head coach of women’s soccer at Cornell. Hornibrook has served as an assistant at Cornell for the past five seasons and most recently was interim head coach … Metropolitan State University of Denver named Tracy Chao its new women’s head coach. Chao spent the past five seasons at the College of Charleston, most recently as associate head coach … Drury named Ben Taylor head coach for its men’s program. Taylor played for the Panthers from 2007 to 2010. He spent the previous six seasons as head coach at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Beach volleyball and men’s and women’s volleyball — Katie Schumacher-Cawley has stepped down as head coach of the women’s team at Illinois-Chicago after eight seasons to accept the head coaching position at Pennsylvania … Quincy announced Bob Crank would take over as head coach of the men’s team on an interim basis for the remainder of the season. Crank wrapped up his fourth season as Quincy’s women's volleyball head coach in the fall. He replaces Hadley Foster as men’s coach … SUNY Oneonta announced Ashley Coyle as the head coach of the women’s team. Coyle served the past two years as Coast Guard’s assistant coach and was an assistant at St. Lawrence from 2013 to 2015. She replaces Colleen Cashman, who took a position with the educational opportunity program on campus after 18 seasons as head coach.


The Southeastern Conference announced the following promotions: Charlie Hussey to chief operating officer, Chris Waldsmith to associate commissioner for finance, Sylvia Hagan Barnes to director of officiating administration, Cole Cunningham to director of video operations and Brett Thompson to associate director of marketing and competition. The conference also hired Randall Malone as director of video operations and Mike Mims as assistant director of championship ticket operations.


Dean Ehlers, former athletics director at James Madison, died Feb. 19 at age 87. Ehlers began his role as athletics director in 1971, when the university was known as Madison College. Under Ehlers’ leadership, James Madison moved to Division I and started a football program … Nick Roberts, a senior wrestler at Pittsburgh-Johnstown who won the 2016 Division II national title in the 133-pound weight class, was found dead Feb. 25. Roberts transferred from Ohio State before the 2015-16 season. He was 23.
