Presidents and chancellors – Eastern New Mexico President Steven Gamble gave notice that he will be retiring in the summer of 2017. He has served as president for 15 years … King (Tennessee) appointed Alexander W. Whitaker IV as president, effective Aug. 1. Whitaker currently serves as chief of staff and secretary to the board of trustees at Berry. 

Athletics directors – Buena Vista hired Jack Denholm as director of athletics. Denholm, who has more than 20 years of experience as an administrator, has been serving as athletics director at Valley City State University in North Dakota since 2010 … UT Martin Athletics Director Julio Freire resigned to take a position as deputy athletics director for external affairs at Pittsburgh.

Associate athletics directors – UTRGV hired James Martinez, who had been executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of McAllen (Texas), as senior associate athletics director for business operations.

Assistant athletics directors – Ohio hired Hunter Hughes as assistant athletics director for development. Hughes previously served as the director of annual giving at Washington State … Marcus Sedberry has been named assistant athletics director for student-athlete development and administration at Arkansas. Sedberry previously spent two years with Arkansas athletics before leaving in 2014 to become director of player engagement for the Philadelphia Eagles … Lauren Adee, who has been with the Temple athletics development office for 1 ½ years,  was promoted to assistant athletics director for major gifts … Colorado Mesa hired Austin Kaiser as assistant athletic director of compliance and student success. Kaiser replaces Jim Heaps, who retired after more than 30 years at Colorado Mesa … Bridgeport selected Sara Richwine as assistant athletics director for compliance. Richwine previously was at Central Connecticut State, where she served as athletics compliance assistant.


Men’s basketball – TCU hired Jamie Dixon as head coach. Dixon, a 2007 TCU Hall of Fame inductee, returns to his alma mater after serving 13 seasons as head coach at Pittsburgh, where he earned four college basketball National Coach of the Year honors … Oklahoma State named Brad Underwood head coach. In three years as head coach at Stephen F. Austin, Underwood amassed an 89-14 record, tied for the most wins by a head coach in his first three seasons at an NCAA school … Northwest Nazarene introduced Brian Holsinger as head coach. Holsinger has 16 years of coaching experience, including two years as head coach at Montana Tech and a season as associate head coach at Washington State.

Women’s basketball – Buck Scheel was named head coach at Northwest Missouri State. Scheel, who has been an assistant coach for the team since 2013, was named interim head coach in December … Missouri Southern’s Ronda Hubbard resigned after three seasons as head coach. Associate head coach Ronnie Ressel has been named  interim head coach for the 2016-17 season.

Men’s and women’s soccer – Glenville State hired Alderson Broaddus assistant Nathan Kogut as its first head women’s soccer coach. The college expects to add women’s soccer as a varsity sport in 2017-18 … Dan Frick, who served the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Goldey-Beacom, was named head coach of the women’s team.

Men’s and women’s soccer assistants – Washington U. in St. Louis hired Tia Nardella as a full-time assistant coach for the women’s team. She spent the 2015 season as the director of women’s soccer operations at Harvard.

Men’s and women’s tennis – Mark Ellingson, a longtime coach at Colchester High School in Vermont, has been hired as the new women’s head coach at Saint Michael’s … Carl Leedy, who has guided the Ashland women’s tennis team since the spring of 2002 and has coached tennis for a half-century, announced his retirement. Leedy finishes his Eagle coaching career with a record of 174-154, along with seven Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament appearances and three NCAA tournament berths.

Wrestling – Newberry head coach Jason Valek resigned at the end of the season. Valek, who has overseen the program since its inception in 2004, led Newberry to eight top-20 finishes at the NCAA Division II championships and a dual-meet record of 194-46-2. Associate head coach R.C. LaHaye was named interim coach.


Athletic trainers – Bridgeport hired Scott Baird as head athletic trainer. Baird served as head athletic trainer at South Dakota Mines from 2007 to 2015.

Strength and conditioning – Concordia-St. Paul hired Rich White as head strength and conditioning coach. White previously served two years as the strength and conditioning graduate assistant coach and completed his master’s degree in sport management in February. 


March 18

Presidents and chancellors – Joel K. Pearsall was appointed president at Northwest Nazarene after serving as interim president since June … Bellarmine appointed Doris Tegart, the university’s executive vice president, to serve as interim president … James Hallmark, vice chancellor for academic affairs for the Texas A&M system, was appointed interim president at West Texas A&M … Gayle E. Hutchinson was named president of Chico State. Hutchinson is currently the provost and vice president for academic affairs at California State University, Channel Islands, and a former dean and faculty member of Chico State. Hutchinson succeeds Paul Zingg, who is retiring in June.

Athletics directors – Concordia-St. Paul hired Mark “Lunch” McKenzie as director of athletics. McKenzie, who is in his 17th year leading the Golden Bear baseball program, will continue as head coach through at least the 2016-17 academic year.

Associate athletics directors – Ayo Taylor-Dixon was named senior associate athletics director at Minnesota, where he will oversee the marketing department and sales and service operations … UCF hired Eric Wood as senior associate athletics director for academic services. Wood has served as associate athletics director for student-athlete services at Arkansas since 2011.

Assistant athletics directors – Colgate hired Brian Grady as an assistant athletics director for advancement. He has served since 2012 as director of athletics development for Utica.


Men’s basketball – Clark Atlanta relieved head coach Tony LaMarr of his duties after three seasons … Stanford announced that head coach Johnny Dawkins has been relieved of his duties after eight seasons … Tulane head coach Ed Conroy will not be retained. He spent six seasons with the university … UCF relieved head coach Donnie Jones of his duties after six years … Pacific head coach Ron Verlin is no longer with the university. Mike Burns finished the season as interim coach. Damon Stoudamire, who spent 13 years playing in the NBA, was named the permanent head coach. For the past seven years, Stoudamire has coached as an assistant with the Memphis Grizzlies, Arizona Wildcats and most recently the Memphis Tigers … Saint Louis announced that Jim Crews has been released as head coach … Denver selected former Pioneer point guard and current Colorado assistant coach Rodney Billups as head coach. Billups replaces Joe Scott … Chadron State head coach Brent Bargen resigned, effective June 30, after 10 seasons leading the Eagles … Grant McCasland was named head coach at Arkansas State. A 17-year coaching veteran, McCasland spent the past five seasons as an assistant at Baylor and previously was head coach for two seasons at Midwestern State … TCU announced that Trent Johnson will not return as head coach after four seasons … Cornell did not renew the contract of head coach Bill Courtney, who guided the Big Red for six seasons … James Madison and head coach Matt Brady have parted ways. Brady coached the Dukes for eight seasons … After 40 years as a college basketball coach, including the past 20 as head coach at his alma mater, Central Connecticut, Howie Dickenman is retiring … Prairie View A&M named Byron Smith head coach. Smith spent the previous three seasons as an assistant and served as interim head coach the final three months of the 2015-16 season … Delaware parted ways with head coach Monte Ross, who led the Blue Hens for 10 years.

Women’s basketball – Charles Marshall was named head coach at West Virginia State after serving in the same position at Glenville State for three seasons … Chadron State head coach Tim Connealy resigned, effective June 30, after eight seasons leading the program … Daemen will not renew the contract of head coach David Skolen, who coached the Wildcats for 24 seasons … UIndy’s Constanin Popa, who has been head coach since 2011, will not be retained … Michael Bari resigned as head coach at West Virginia Wesleyan after two seasons leading the team.

Women’s basketball assistants – Madison Martin and David Rogers resigned as assistants with West Virginia Wesleyan’s program.

Women’s bowling – LIU Post appointed Edward Raven to coach the program it is adding for the 2016-17 academic year.

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field – Missouri Southern State women's track and field and cross country coach Patty Vavra announced she will retire from coaching at the end of the season. Vavra, now in her 22nd year as a coach at the university, will continue as an associate professor in the kinesiology department … Andrew Shearer, a coach at Middleton High School in Delaware, was picked as the new men’s and women’s cross country coach at Goldey-Beacom.
 Men’s and women’s soccer – The Sage Colleges named Skidmore assistant Keith Simons as head men’s coach. Simons, replaces Kyle Clancy, who became head men’s coach at SUNY New Paltz … David Oberholtzer has been named head men’s coach at his alma mater, Fort Lewis. Oberholtzer, who played two seasons for the Skyhawks before serving as an assistant coach from 2009 to 2012, most recently served as an assistant at Dayton … Aimee Haywood, a former goalkeeper and all-conference performer at Ohio Dominican, was named head women’s coach for the Panthers. She has spent four seasons as an assistant with the program and another as an assistant at Denison … Dixie State coach Josh Pittman was hired as the men’s head coach at Westminster (Utah).

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving – Carson-Newman men’s and women’s coach Paige McCord resigned. McCord was named the program’s first coach in October 2012.

Men’s and women’s tennis – Jeffrey Farris will lead the men’s and women’s programs at his alma mater, Delta State, beginning July 1. Farris was the 2001 Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Year and a two-time all-Gulf South selection at Delta State … Wilmington (Delaware) hired Brad Rose as head coach of its first women’s tennis program, which will begin competition in the fall. Rose coached the women’s program at Camden County College in New Jersey the past two seasons. 

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Riann Mullis, former head coach at Cowley College in Kansas, will be Chadron State’s next head women’s coach … Longtime club coach Bob Trinsey was named coach of Goldey-Beacom’s women’s team.


Mike Tranghese, former commissioner of the Big East Conference and a veteran of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, has been named special advisor to the commissioner for men’s basketball in the Southeastern Conference.


Donnie Duncan, a former Oklahoma athletics director, Big 12 administrator and Iowa State football coach, died March 12 at age 75. 


March 15

Associate athletics director – Cathy Rossi, who spent the past two years as the director of budget and finance at Minnesota, has been named deputy athletics director at Milwaukee … Ohio State announced changes to its athletics department, effective July 1. Martin Jarmond, executive associate athletics director for administration, will be promoted to deputy director of athletics and chief of staff. Janine Oman, associate athletics director-sport administration and performance, will be promoted to senior associate athletics director and will assume the role of senior woman administrator … Mark Vaughan, former South Carolina Football Hall of Fame vice president, was named associate athletics director for athletics development at Anderson (South Carolina) … High Point named Corey Bass associate athletics director for development. He previously was manager of business development for Tar Heel Sports Properties, a property of Learfield Sports.

Assistant athletics director – Flagler hired Joey Wiles as assistant athletics director for development, a newly created position. Wiles, who has spent the past 20 years as head football coach and a teacher at St. Augustine High School in Florida, will start July 1 … Greg Harrod, who has been compliance coordinator at Cal State Monterey Bay for the past 18 months, was promoted to assistant athletics director for compliance and student services.


Men’s basketball – Aric Samuel has been named head coach at Coker. Samuel has spent the past three seasons as the Cobras’ assistant coach … Fresno Pacific coach Tim Kisner announced that he will step down from his position to pursue other opportunities. Kisner joined the Fresno Pacific staff last April after spending four years as the associate head coach at Lake Superior State … Cory Cole, associate head coach for the Grand Canyon women’s basketball team, has been named head coach of the men’s team at his alma mater, Oklahoma Christian. Cole, a member of the Oklahoma Christian Athletic Hall of Fame, will succeed Dan Hays, who stepped down after 33 years … Eastern New Mexico announced the resignation of coach Stott Carter. Carter served on the Greyhound staff for seven seasons, the past two as head coach … Greg Gard was named head coach at Wisconsin. Gard is in his 15th season on the Badgers basketball staff, serving as associate head coach since 2008. He spent most of the 2015-16 season as interim head coach after Bo Ryan retired … Head coach Kerry Keating will not return to Santa Clara next season after nine years with the Broncos … John Brady stepped down as Arkansas State’s head coach at the end of the season, finishing his eight-year tenure at the university with 121 wins. Brady captured his 400th career victory this season … Drexel and head coach James “Bruiser” Flint have parted ways. In his 15 years on Drexel’s bench, Flint’s teams compiled a 245-217 record … Jay Joyner was named head coach at North Carolina A&T. Joyner, who was previously the Aggies associate head coach, served as interim head coach for the last part of the season after Cy Alexander resigned … Aki Thomas, head coach at UMBC, has been relieved of his duties after four years leading the Retrievers … UTSA relieved Brooks Thompson of his duties after 10 years as the program’s head coach.

 Women’s basketball – West Virginia State removed coach David Smith from his post. Smith, who coached the Yellow Jackets for four seasons and earned his 600th career win in 2014, previously coached for 14 seasons at Bellarmine … Cindy Hilbrich, who became Montevallo’s head coach in 2011, has resigned.

Football – Limestone decided to part ways with Bobby James, the first head coach in the program’s history. Defensive coordinator Drew Anthony has been named the interim head coach through spring practice … Lovie Smith, who led the Chicago Bears for nine seasons and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for two, will be the next head coach at Illinois. He replaces Bill Cubit.

Men’s and women’s tennis – Mark Ellingson, a coach at Colchester High School in Vermont, has been hired as women’s head coach at Saint Michael’s.

Men’s and women’s volleyball – MSU Denver hired Jenny Glenn as head women’s coach. Glenn spent nine seasons at Northern Colorado, the past four as associate head coach … Converse announced Amy Nokes as head women’s coach. Nokes served as an assistant at Presbyterian last season … Jennifer Charles has been named head coach of the women’s team at Mount Olive. Charles, who most recently was interim head women’s coach for two months at North Carolina Central, also will serve as an assistant for the Trojan men’s team.


Joe D’Antonio has been selected as commissioner of the Colonial Athletic Association, effective July 1. He currently serves as senior associate commissioner for administration and NCAA relations for the Big East Conference.

March 4

Athletics directors – Lenoir-Rhyne selected Kimberly Pate as director of intercollegiate athletics. Pate previously served as athletics director at Illinois-Springfield and Brevard … Concordia (California) named Mo Roberson director of athletics. Roberson, who became associate athletics director in fall 2013, had served as interim director of athletics since Jan. 7. 

Associate athletics directors – Brad Wachler was hired as vice president for intercollegiate athletics at Lindenwood (Missouri), effective July 1. He currently is senior associate athletics director at Central Michigan … Iowa promoted Paula Jantz and Matt Henderson to senior associate athletics directors. Henderson most recently served as assistant vice president for athletics development at the University of Iowa Foundation. Jantz has been a member of the Iowa staff since 1980, most recently as associate director of athletics for event management and operations … James Madison promoted longtime sports medicine staff member Tom Kuster to associate athletics director for integrated health and sports performance.

Assistant athletics directors – UTSA hired Tony Jeffery as assistant athletics director for football. Jeffery previously was an assistant football coach at UTSA for two separate stints and a total of five years.


Baseball – Coker head coach Dave Schmotzer will retire from coaching at the end of the school year. Schmotzer, who has coached at Coker since 1992, will remain at the college as a full-time physical education teacher.

Men’s basketball – Dan Schmotzer, the longest-tenured coach in Coker history, is retiring from coaching after 29 years. Schmotzer also spent six years as the head men’s golf coach at Coker from 1998 to 2003. He will remain at the college teaching in the physical education department and serving as intramural director.

Women’s basketball – Northwestern Oklahoma State announced it would not renew the contract of head coach Brett Vana … Western State’s Van Girard announced he was retiring as head coach. Girard spent the past four seasons at Western after spending 24 seasons at the helm of the Cal State Dominguez Hills program.

Field hockey – Deirdre O’Neill was named head coach at Mercy. She started at Mercy last fall as an assistant with the team, as well as the media relations assistant.

Football – Shaw hired Adrian Jones as its new head coach. Jones previously was the running backs coach for North Carolina Central.

Football assistants – Chuck Bullough, the defensive coordinator for Syracuse, has been named an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan.

Men’s and women’s soccer – New York Institute of Technology hired Rachel Reeves to lead its women’s team. Reeves spent the past two seasons as an assistant at Wagner … Le Moyne named Carrie Bonus its head women’s coach. Bonus previously coached at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, New York … Lenoir-Rhyne selected Jack Winter to be interim head men’s coach. Winter has served as an assistant coach for the Bears for the past three years … Walsh hired Andy Hoggarth as head coach of the men’s team. Hoggarth was head coach at Slippery Rock for two seasons … LeBaron Hollimon, who spent the 2015 season as interim women’s head coach at Cal State San Bernadino, has been named to the position permanently. Hollimon served as an assistant men’s coach in 2014.

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Colorado State-Pueblo hired San Francisco State coach Jill Muhe to lead its women’s team … Dwight Combs Jr. was named head coach of the New Mexico Highlands women’s team. Combs formerly coached at UC Santa Cruz … East Central hired alumnus Melissa Anderson as women’s head coach. Anderson spent the past eight years coaching the women’s team at Otero Junior College in La Junta, Colorado … Jody Brown was hired as head women’s coach at North Carolina Central. Brown, who has 17 years of Division I coaching experience at Florida Atlantic, most recently worked for the Institute of Volleyball Performance and the North Carolina Volleyball Academy … Callaway Mefford has been named head coach of the women’s team at St. Mary's (Texas) after spending four seasons at St. Thomas University (Florida), where she finished with a 77-39 record. 


Kathryn Lucchesi has been named director of social media for Oregon State athletics. She previously was multimedia director for the football program at Missouri. 


The Western Athletic Conference hired Marlon Edge as assistant commissioner for compliance. Edge spent the past 13 years at the Mountain West Conference, most recently as director of compliance. 


Bellarmine President Joseph J. McGowan, 71, died March 1 after an illness. McGowan, who became president in 1990, led Bellarmine through a period of growth and its transition from a college to a university.


March 1

Presidents and chancellors – Truman President Troy D. Paino has been named the next president of Mary Washington, effective July 1 … West Texas A&M President J. Patrick O’Brien announced he will retire at the end of the academic year after 10 years in his post and more than four decades in higher education.

Athletics directors – Justin X. Carroll has been named interim director of athletics at Washington U. in St. Louis. Carroll worked for the past 35 years on the university’s Danforth campus, including as dean of students and assistant vice chancellor … David Harris, senior associate athletics director at Iowa State, has been named director of intercollegiate athletics at the University of Northern Iowa … Indiana State hired Sherard Clinkscales as its new director of athletics. He most recently was the senior associate athletics director for student services and sport administration at North Carolina State … Greg Seitz has been named the director of athletics at Jacksonville State. Seitz, who was serving as interim athletics director for more than a year, is in his 23rd year in the athletics department … La Salle named Bill Bradshaw to the role of interim director of intercollegiate athletics and recreation. Bradshaw has more than 36 years of experience as a Division I athletics director at La Salle, DePaul and Temple … David Benedict, the chief operating officer for the athletics department at Auburn, has been named the director of athletics at UConn … Tusculum appointed Doug Jones as director of athletics. Jones, who has served as interim athletics director since Nov. 1, will continue in the dual role as Tusculum’s head baseball coach, a position he has held since 1998.
Associate athletics directors – Lauren Packer Webster was named associate director of athletics at RIT. She spent the past eight seasons at Mercyhurst, most recently as associate athletics director. 

Assistant athletics directors – Longtime Appalachian State athletics staff member Teresa Eggers has been promoted to assistant athletics director for ticket operations.


Men’s basketball – Darryl Jacobs is no longer the head coach at Queens (New York) … Tommy Brown’s 11 years as head coach at Lee have come to an end. Brown leaves the university with an overall record of 244-108.

Women’s basketball – Devan Carter has been named the head coach at Tusculum. Carter, who served most of the 2015-16 season as interim coach, also was associate head coach of the Tusculum men’s basketball program.

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field – Micah VanDenend, men’s and women’s cross country and track and field coach for the past six seasons at Wisconsin-Parkside, has resigned to pursue other career opportunities … Northwestern Oklahoma State named Clay Tarter the head men’s and women’s cross country coach. Tarter has 38 years of experience coaching at the high school level.

Men’s and women’s golf – Clarion hired Dylan Reinsel, a 2014 graduate and former member of the Golden Eagle men’s golf team, as its head women’s coach.  

Men’s and women’s soccer  Maryville (Missouri) named David Korn as the head coach for the Saints men’s team. Korn spent the past two seasons at SIUE … Alabama-Huntsville hired Chris Kranjc as its head men’s coach. In 17 years as head coach of the men’s team at Hastings College in Nebraska, Kranjc compiled a 297-67-21 record, and his 2010 team won the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics championship … John Miglarese was named men’s head coach at UNC Pembroke.

Miglarese was head coach at King (Tennessee) for the past three seasons … MSU Denver appointed Jeremy Tittle as head men’s coach. As interim coach for the 2015 season, Tittle led the Roadrunners to a 13-4-2 record … John McGillivray, who coached for 42 years at Cedarville, announced his retirement as head coach of the women’s team. McGillivray amassed 160 victories in 18 seasons as women’s head coach and, before that, 215 wins in 24 seasons coaching the men’s team. He will be replaced by Jonathan Meade, the head women’s coach for the past eight years at Ohio Dominican.

Football – Saint Augustine’s named Tim Chavous as head football coach. Chavous coached the Falcons for eight games on an interim basis in the 2015 season. He has been with the football program for four seasons, including three as running backs coach … South Dakota Mines head coach Stacy Collins resigned to become special teams coordinator at Utah State. Zach Tinker, who spent the past four seasons as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the Hardrockers, will replace Collins.

Football assistants – UTSA hired Everette Sands as running backs coach. Sands most recently was a running backs coach at South Carolina.

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Carol Price-Torok was named head coach of Bradley’s women’s team. Price-Torok spent eight seasons at Arkansas, most recently as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator. 


The Heartland Conference hired Brandon Tripp as director of communication and strategic positioning. Tripp most recently was social media strategist for North Texas.
