Presidents and chancellors — Richard A. Carvajal, interim president of Darton State College in Albany, Georgia, was named president of Valdosta State … Ron Larsen, who heads the department of chemical and biological engineering at Montana State in Bozeman, has been named interim chancellor at Montana State Billings.

Athletics directors  John Parry, athletics director for Cleveland State, announced he will retire after the 2017 spring season. Parry has spent 33 years as an athletics director, including six at Cleveland State, 11 at Brown and 16 at Butler.

Associate athletics director  Villanova hired Josh Heird as associate athletics director for internal operations and finance. Most recently, Heird served as Louisville's assistant athletics director for championships and facilities … Cara Wright was named associate athletics director for business administration and senior woman administrator at Alabama A&M … Saginaw Valley State hired Nedra Brown as associate athletics director for compliance and academic services.

Assistant athletics director  Hillsdale hired Josh Calver as assistant athletics director for business management and compliance. Calver most recently was team relations manager with the Lansing Lugnuts baseball club in Michigan.


Men's basketball  In his 19th year as head coach at Newman, Mark Potter announced he will retire at the end of the season. Potter, a Newman alum who played both basketball and baseball for the Jets, returned to the school for the 1998-99 season to revive a men's basketball program that had been dormant for 11 years.

Beach volleyball and men's and women's volleyball  Dan Meske, head coach of the Augustana (South Dakota) women's program, resigned to accept a position as the associate head coach at Louisville … Queens (North Carolina) selected Jeremy Price head coach of its new men's team, which will begin competition in 2018. Price was head men's coach at Grand Canyon from 2010 to 2015.

Men's and women's cross country and track and field  Virginia State hired Wilbert Johnson as head coach of the men's and women's cross country and track and field teams. Johnson previously coached for seven seasons at Virginia Union … USciences named Rich DiGiacomo head coach of the men's and women's track and field teams. DiGiacomo just finished his first season as head coach of the cross country program … Purdue Northwest, which is in the Division II membership process, hired Austin Warner to lead the Pride men's and women's cross country programs.

Field hockey  Massachusetts hired Barb Weinberg as head coach. Weinberg was Wake Forest's associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for the past three seasons … Shippensburg head coach Bertie Landes is retiring after 18 seasons and a 302-77-1 record with the Raiders. She goes out on top, having just led Shippensburg to the 2016 NCAA Division II championship. She also coached the 2013 Shippensburg team to a national title. 

Football  Delaware selected Danny Rocco as head coach. Rocco has coached at Liberty and Richmond over the past decade … Olivet head coach Dan Pifer resigned after five seasons with the Comets to accept the head coaching position at Walsh. Pifer led the Comets to back-to-back Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships in the 2015 and 2016 seasons … West Texas A&M hired Hunter Hughes as head coach. Hughes spent the past 10 years as defensive coordinator at Colorado State-Pueblo.

Football assistants Rick Smith, whose coaching career spanned four decades and covered professional, college and high school levels, announced his retirement as East Carolina's assistant head coach and defensive backs mentor.

Men's and women's golf  Matthew Steinbach, former Simon Fraser men's team captain, has been appointed interim head coach of the men's and women's programs while longtime coach John Buchanan is on medical leave.

Men's and women's lacrosse  Pacific named Jacqueline McDevitt head coach of its women's team. McDevitt most recently was head coach at Holy Family University.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants Wingate named Joe Turner assistant coach for the men's team … Delaware added two former players to the coaching staff of its women's team. Allison Daley, a Canisius graduate, will be an assistant coach for the Blue Hens, while Dené DiMartino, a 2016 Johns Hopkins graduate, will serve as a volunteer assistant coach.

Men's and women's soccer  Bob Winch was tapped as head coach of the men's team at Brevard. Winch, who most recently was an assistant women's coach at Brandeis, previously was head coach of the women's team at The Citadel for 10 years … McKendree hired Scott Gyllenborg as head coach for the men's program. Gyllenborg spent the past three years as an assistant coach at SIUE … Paul Lawrence was named head coach of the Florida Southern women's program. Lawrence spent the past three seasons coaching at Knox College.


December, 13

Presidents and chancellors — Joseph G. Joyner, superintendent of schools for St. Johns County District in St. Augustine, Florida, was named president of Flagler … Mark Nook, chancellor at Montana State Billings since 2014, was named president of the University of Northern Iowa … Chaminade selected Lynn M. Babington as president. Babington, who will begin Aug. 1, has been provost and senior vice president of academic affairs at Fairfield.

Athletics directors — Portland State Director of Athletics Mark Rountree announced his resignation to become deputy athletics director at Georgia Tech. Portland State hired Valerie Cleary as athletics director. Cleary, who previously was senior associate athletics director at Portland State, spent the past two years as athletics director at Willamette … SUNY Maritime selected Kristofer Schnatz to lead its athletics department. Schnatz, a 1999 Maritime graduate, played basketball for the Privateers … Barbara Dearing will retire June 30 as executive director of intercollegiate athletics at Western Oregon. Dearing became athletics director in July 2013

Associate athletics directors — MSU Denver promoted Erin Hiltner and John Kietzmann to associate directors of athletics … Denver elevated longtime administrator Ron Grahame to deputy director of athletics.

Assistant athletics directors — Jim Sherrill, who has led new technology efforts for North Carolina State athletics for more than 20 years, is retiring as assistant athletics director, a title he has had since 2006 … Phil Milbrath was named assistant athletics director at Finlandia. He previously served as Finlandia’s director of football operations in addition to running backs coach and special teams coordinator … Centenary (Louisiana) appointed women’s soccer coach David Orr as assistant athletics director for recreation and facilities. Orr, who previously served as the men’s soccer coach, will give up his coaching duties.


Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field — MSU Denver announced the resignation of head men’s and women’s cross country and track coach Nick Maas, who spent four years in the position … Bart Mestelle was named head men’s and women’s track and field coach at William Jewel after serving as interim head coach for most of the academic year. Mestelle was an assistant coach for the Cardinals in 2015-16.

Beach volleyball and men’s and women’s volleyball — Jenic Tumaneng was named head coach of the Hawaii Pacific women’s team after serving as interim coach since August. Tumaneng led Hawaii Pacific to a 17-12 overall record … Tino Reyes, head coach of the Hawaii Hilo women’s team, stepped down after seven years … Dana Cordova resigned as head coach of the women’s team at Tiffin to become the director of retention and development for the athletics department. Assistant coach Shauna Hurles was named interim head coach. 

Football — Jeff Brohm was named Purdue head coach. Brohm previously was at Western Kentucky, where he compiled a 30-10 record in three years … Lindenwood (Missouri) hired Jed Stugart as head coach. Stugart spent seven seasons at Sioux Falls. Sioux Falls hired Jon Anderson to lead the Cougars. Anderson, a former defensive coordinator for Sioux Falls, most recently served as head coach at West Virginia State for four seasons. West Virginia State selected offensive coordinator and quarterback coach John Pennington as interim head coach … Missouri Western State hired Stephen F. Austin defensive coordinator Matt Williamson as head coach. Williamson is a 1996 Missouri Western State graduate and former assistant with the football team … Albany State (Georgia) offensive coordinator Steven A. Smith was named head coach at Lincoln (Missouri) … Baylor appointed Matt Rhule as head coach. Rhule spent four seasons as head coach at Temple, where he led the Owls to consecutive 10-win seasons in 2015 and 2016 and the 2016 American Athletic Conference championship … Houston promoted offensive coordinator Major Applewhite to head coach.

Men’s and women’s soccer — MSU Denver announced the resignation of head women's coach Adrianne Pietz. Pietz spent nine seasons as head coach of the Roadrunners. 

Softball — Frank Fiore was named assistant coach at Felician. He previously served as a high school pitching coach … Colorado Christian hired former Texas Tech coach Shanon Hays as head coach. Hays coached at Texas Tech from 2010 to 2014.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving — Bree Kelley, assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Clarion, was named interim head coach of the men’s and women’s teams. Kelley replaces Mark VanDyke, who stepped down as head coach after 17 seasons.

Men’s and women’s tennis — Delaware hired Pablo Montana as head coach of the men’s program. Montana spent the past 14 seasons as head coach of the women’s team at California (Pennsylvania).


Jordan Confessore was promoted to associate commissioner for men’s basketball in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, effective Jan. 1. Confessore previously served as the assistant commissioner for women’s basketball.


Former Colorado running back Rashaan Salaam, the 1994 Heisman Trophy winner, was found dead Dec. 5 in a Boulder, Colorado, park. He was 42. Boulder police said there were no signs of foul play. As a junior during the 1994 season, Salaam led the Buffaloes to an 11-1 record that included a win over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl … Rashee Hodges, No. 24 on the Benedict men’s basketball team, was killed by a hit-and-run driver Dec. 4 while walking to his car. Hodges, 22, was a junior transfer from the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie basketball program.


Matthew Ring was named assistant director of development and Eagles Club coordinator for Florida Gulf Coast athletics. Ring spent the previous year working in membership development and services for the Miami Dolphins. Ring was a pitcher for Cincinnati baseball from 2010 to 2014 … Belmont hired Russell Grimm as the Bruins director of athletics fundraising.

Tennis assistants — Katherine Hanson was hired as an assistant coach for the Hofstra men’s and women’s tennis programs. Hofstra, who played tennis for Stony Brook in college, has served as the assistant pro at the Glen Oaks Club in Old Westbury, New York, since 2013 … Washington and Lee appointed Jay Friedman as assistant men’s coach. Friedman previously was at South Florida, where he served as a special assistant on the men’s tennis coaching staff, physical education instructor and teaching assistant.

Presidents and chancellors — Dennis DePerro was named president of St. Bonaventure. DePerro, dean of the Purcell School of Professional Studies at Le Moyne, will take office June 1 … USC Upstate selected Brendan Kelly, vice president for university advancement at West Florida, as chancellor. His appointment becomes effective March 1 … Citing personal reasons, Mirta M. Martin stepped down as president of Fort Hays State.

Athletics directors — Liberty Athletics Director Jeff Barber resigned after nearly 11 years leading the athletics department. Ian McCaw was named to replace him. McCaw spent the past 13 years as athletics director at Baylor … Rogers State named Chris Ratcliff director of athletics. Ratcliff has served as Arkansas-Monticello's athletics director since 2009. Arkansas-Monticello named head baseball coach John Harvey as interim director of athletics … Oklahoma Christian appointed men’s golf coach David Lynn as athletics director. Lynn, who has served as Oklahoma Christian’s interim athletics director since August, will continue his coaching duties … Scott Farmer, who served as Louisiana-Lafayette director of athletics for the past five years, has stepped down. Deputy Director of Athletics Jessica Leger was named interim athletics director … Grambling named Paul Bryant as its next athletics director, effective Jan. 1. Bryant, who has more than 25 years of experience in athletics and 22 years of coaching, most recently has worked as director of athletics at South Carolina State.

Associate athletics directors — UTSA hired Christine Moeller as associate athletics director for sport administration and student-athlete welfare. Moeller spent more than a decade at Cleveland State, most recently as associate athletics director for student affairs … Tennessee promoted David Elliott to associate athletics director for event management … Minot State hired Wendy McManus as associate director of athletics for internal operations and senior woman administrator … Josh Brooks, deputy athletics director at Louisiana-Monroe, has been named executive associate director of athletics at Georgia.

Assistant athletics directors — Rogers State appointed Steve Braun as assistant athletics director for communications … Baldwin Wallace named football coach John Snell assistant athletics director. Snell resigned his position as head coach … Texas Woman’s University promoted Kris Ring to assistant director of athletics for sports medicine. She previously served 18 seasons as head athletic trainer … SIUE announced the appointment of Paul Dodson as assistant athletics director of marketing.


Men’s basketball — Rick Scruggs stepped down as head coach at Mars Hill. Scruggs was in his fifth season with the Lions. Mars Hill appointed assistant coach Vic Finora as interim head coach.

Beach volleyball and men’s and women’s volleyball — West Virginia Wesleyan’s Ashley Ziegle resigned as head women’s coach after two seasons in the position. Assistant coach Chanel Davis was named interim coach … Northern Michigan head women’s coach Dominic Yoder resigned. Yoder compiled a record of 191-117 in 10 seasons. Assistant coach Mandie Meyer will serve as interim head coach … Minot State dismissed head women’s coach Ben Kaszeta after two seasons with the program … UT Arlington women’s coach Diane Seymour has retired to pursue other professional interests. Seymour, who has served as head coach since 2004, has been associated with the UT Arlington program for more than 30 years as a player, assistant coach and head coach.

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field — Texas A&M-Commerce named George Pincock head men’s and women’s track and field and cross country coach. Pincock had served as interim head track and field and cross country coach since late October. He joined the Lions one year ago as an assistant coach … Northwestern Oklahoma State hired Jill Lancaster as head men’s and women's cross country coach. Lancaster, who most recently was a volunteer track and field coach at the high school level, previously was the director of men's and women’s track and field at Troy … Catawba cross country coach Jason Bryan will lead the college’s new men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams, which will begin competition during the 2017-18 academic year.

Football — Missouri Western State relieved Jerry Partridge of his coaching duties. Partridge had been head coach since 1997 … Hunter Sims, who has served as head football coach and director of athletics at Howard Payne since April, is stepping down as coach to focus solely on his duties as athletics director … Mark Helfrich was relieved of his duties as Oregon’s coach after four seasons ... Texas released Charlie Strong as head coach after three seasons. Texas hired Tom Herman, who previously served nearly two years as Houston’s coach. Houston promoted defensive coordinator Todd Orlando to interim head coach … West Texas A&M relieved coach Mike Nesbitt of his duties after four years … LSU hired Ed Orgeron as head coach. Orgeron previously served as interim head coach and defensive line coach at LSU … Butch Davis took over as coach at FIU. Davis had served as a college football studio analyst for ESPN since 2014. He has 10 years of experience as a college head coach … Jeff Tedford took over as Fresno State’s coach. Tedford formerly played quarterback at Fresno State … Georgia State released coach Trent Miles after nearly four seasons … Nevada and head coach Brian Polian mutually decided to part ways after four seasons … San Jose State released coach Ron Caragher after four seasons … Kirk Campbell has been named head coach at Alderson Broaddus. Campbell served five seasons as offensive coordinator …Carl Gustafson will take over as head coach at Texas Lutheran. He succeeds Danny Padron, who retired after seven seasons at the helm … Stacey Hairston resigned after four years as coach at Wilmington (Ohio) … St. Olaf parted ways with Craig Stern, who was head coach for four seasons … Jay Anderson resigned as head coach at Buena Vista after 11 seasons in the position … Birmingham-Southern selected Tony Joe White as its head coach. White, who most recently was offensive coordinator at Centre, replaces Eddie Garfinkel … Walsh parted ways with head coach Ted Karras.

Men’s and women’s golf — Stonehill named Nick Crovetti head coach of its women's team, which will begin its first season of competition during the 2017-18 academic year. Crovetti built Merrimack’s women’s program from scratch over the past five years.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse — Marc Palombo, who served for the past four seasons as an assistant women’s coach at Massachusetts Maritime, was promoted to head women’s coach. 

Men’s and women’s soccer — After three years as coach of the Valdosta State women’s program, Rebecca Nolin stepped down to move closer to her extended family … North Carolina State hired George Kiefer as head men’s coach. Kiefer just completed his 15th season at the helm of the South Florida men's program.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving — Jamie Bloom was named head coach of the new men’s and women’s programs at William Peace, which will begin competition in the 2017-18 season.


The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association added Suzette McQueen as senior associate commissioner of external operations and strategic marketing.


Henry “Hank” Ford, a former athletics director at Alfred, Howard and Savannah State, died Sept. 10 at age 70. Ford previously had served as head men’s basketball coach at Hampton and Tuskegee. He also played basketball while a student at Maryland Eastern Shore … Monk Bonasorte, senior associate athletics director for internal operations at Florida State, died of cancer Nov. 19 at age 59. Bonasorte was a safety for Florida State football from 1977 to 1980 and was inducted into the Florida State Athletics Hall of Fame … Johnny Overby, who served as supervisor of basketball and football officials for the Missouri Valley and Big Eight conferences, died Nov. 25 at age 85 … Harry Flournoy Jr., a co-captain on the 1965-66 Texas Western College men’s basketball team that was the first to win an NCAA championship by starting five African-American players, died of complications from kidney failure Nov. 26 in Atlanta. He was 72. Flournoy helped lead Texas Western, now known as UTEP, to a 28-1 record, including a 72-65 victory over an all-white Kentucky team coached by Adolph Rupp in the 1966 championship game. During that season, Flournoy averaged 8.3 points and 10.7 rebounds. The historic season was the basis of the book and film “Glory Road” … Karla Wolters, who taught and coached at Hope College for 23 years before retiring in 2010, died Nov. 28. She was 65. A 1973 Hope graduate, Wolters coached softball, volleyball, field hockey and women’s tennis at Hope.
