Presidents – Krista Newkirk, chief of staff at Charlotte, was announced as president of Converse. Previously, Newkirk was senior associate general counsel at Charlotte and worked as an attorney in both private practice and at a Fortune 300 company.

Athletics directors – Minot State Athletics Director Rick Hedberg is resigning his position to accept the university’s vice president for advancement position. During his 15 years as athletics director, Hedberg guided the Beavers through their transition to NCAA Division II … Millsaps hired Donnie Brooks to serve as director of athletics. Brooks most recently has worked as assistant director of athletics for peak performance at Dartmouth.

Associate athletics directors – Michael Bazemore has been hired as associate director of athletics for compliance and operations at Truman. Bazemore has been at Montana State Billings for more than four years … Jacksonville State promoted Greg Bonds to senior associate athletics director and Josh Underwood to associate athletics director for media relations … Millersville hired Larry Earnesty as associate director of athletics for compliance and academics. Earnesty worked the previous seven years at New Haven.

Assistant athletics directors – Davis and Elkins appointed Benjamin Dishong as assistant athletics director for external relations. Dishong was director of athletics communication at Belhaven for the past two years.… Tennessee promoted Tom Satkowiak to assistant athletics director for media relations. Satkowiak, who has served as an associate media relations director since 2008, will remain the primary contact for men’s basketball … John Gourlay has been named assistant athletics director for development at Arkansas. Gourlay has spent the past 1½ years as director of development for planned giving in the Office of University Advancement and previously was an assistant director at the Razorback Foundation … Northern Michigan hired Alex Tiseo as assistant athletics director for compliance. Tiseo most recently served as assistant athletics director for compliance and NCAA liaison at Wayne State (Michigan). 


Men’s basketball – Eastern New Mexico named Tres Segler head coach. Segler had served as the top Midwestern State assistant coach since 2012 … UCF named former Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins as head coach … Brian Earl, who spent nine seasons as an assistant and associate head coach at Princeton, has been named head coach at Cornell … James Madison hired Louis Rowe as head coach. A former James Madison student-athlete and assistant coach, Rowe most recently served as the top assistant coach at Bowling Green … Jerod Haase was named Stanford’s basketball coach. Haase recently completed his fourth season as head coach at UAB. UAB promoted Robert Ehsan to replace Haase. Ehsan spent two seasons as associate head coach at UAB and two as an assistant … Tulane selected longtime NBA coach Mike Dunleavy Sr. as head coach. Dunleavy has more than 30 years of NBA experience as a player, general manager and head coach. As an NBA coach, Dunleavy won 613 regular season games with four teams, the Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee Bucks, Portland Trailblazers and Los Angeles Clippers … Terry Porter, a 17-year NBA veteran player and former NBA coach, has been named head coach at Portland … UTRGV named Lew Hill head coach. Hill recently completed his fifth season as an assistant coach at Oklahoma … Scott Nagy was named coach at Wright State. In 21 seasons as head coach at South Dakota State, Nagy guided the school from Division II to Division I and compiled an overall record of 410-240. South Dakota State hired T.J. Otzelberger as head coach. He most recently was an assistant coach at Iowa State … Former Butler student-athlete and assistant coach LaVall Jordan was selected as head coach at Milwaukee. Jordan spent the past six seasons as an assistant coach at Michigan … Pittsburgh hired Kevin Stallings as head coach. Stallings has compiled a 455-283 record with nine NCAA tournament appearances over a 23-year head coaching career, including 17 seasons at Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt named Bryce Drew to replace Stallings as head coach. A three-time Horizon League Coach of the Year, Drew spent five years at Valparaiso, where he averaged 25 wins a season. At Valparaiso, assistant coach Matt Lottich was promoted to head coach. Lottich  has been a member of the Crusaders coaching staff for the past three years … Jacksonville State selected Ray Harper as head coach. He previously spent five years at Western Kentucky, where he posted an 89-64 mark that included three 20-win seasons and two trips to the NCAA tournament. Western Kentucky named Rick Stansbury head coach. Stansbury had 293 wins as head coach at Mississippi State from 1998 to 2012. Most recently, he was associate head coach at Texas A&M … Wyoming head coach Larry Shyatt stepped aside after six seasons. Assistant coach Allen Edwards, who joined the Wyoming program in 2011, succeeded him … Dartmouth head coach Paul Cormier will not return to his position for the 2016-17 season after six years in his second stint with the Big Green. He departs with a record of 142-211 at Dartmouth … Jeff Boals, who spent the past seven seasons as an assistant coach at Ohio State, has been named head coach at Stony Brook. Kyle Keller has been named head coach at Stephen F. Austin. Keller recently wrapped up his fifth season as an assistant coach at Texas A&M. Columbia hired Jim Engles as head coach. Engles spent the past eight years as head coach for the New Jersey Institute, where his team had back-to-back 20-win seasons the past two years. Before that, Engles served as an assistant coach at Columbia from 2003 to 2008. Brian Kennedy, an assistant to Engles since 2012, was named head coach at New Jersey Institute.  … Army West Point promoted associate head coach Jimmy Allen to head coach. Allen spent the past six seasons on the Army West Point coaching staff… Wes Flanigan was tapped as Little Rock’s head coach. A Little Rock native, Flanigan has spent five years with the program and served as associate head coach in 2015-16 when the Trojans finished the season 30-5  … Orlando “Tubby” Smith, who guided Kentucky to the 1998 NCAA title, has been named head coach at Memphis. Smith has a 557-276 career record in 25 seasons coaching at Tulsa, Georgia, Kentucky, Minnesota and Texas Tech. Smith replaced Josh Pastner, who accepted the head coaching position at Georgia Tech after seven seasons with the Tigers … Nicholls State announced that J.P. Piper will not return as head coach. Piper took over the program in 2004 … Detroit announced that head coach Ray McCallum has been relieved of his duties after eight seasons with the program.

Women’s basketball – Pepperdine assistant coach Lacey Burns was named head coach at Concordia (California) … Point Loma men’s basketball coach Bill Carr has accepted the position of head coach of the Santa Clara women’s team. At Point Loma the past five years, Carr posted a record of 80-64 … After seven seasons as head coach at Columbus State, Jonathan Norton has announced his resignation. Norton will become principal of Wynnbrook Christian School and chief administration officer of Wynnbrook Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia … Fresno Pacific accepted the resignation of head coach Lindsey Wilson. Wilson joined the staff in the summer of 2013. Lead assistant John Bonner will be interim head coach … Gary Van Atta resigned as head coach at Trevecca Nazarene. Van Atta, who spent 11 seasons at Trevecca Nazarene, said he is returning to Montevallo, where he previously coached for seven seasons … Jazmone Turner has been named head coach at Ohio Valley after serving as interim coach last season.

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field – Seton Hill promoted Jenna Fatica to head coach for men’s and women’s cross country and track and field. Fatica previously served as an assistant coach … Virginia at Wise named 2011 graduate Sarah Smith Carlson to lead the men’s and women’s cross country teams. She serves as assistant director of the Winston Ely Health & Wellness Center at the college.

Football – Saint Anselm hired former Syracuse offensive line coach Joe Adam as head coach for the Hawks. Before Syracuse, Adam spent eight seasons at Elmhurst, serving as head coach for the 2013 season.

Men’s and women’s soccer – Rogers State head women’s coach Heather Cato resigned to become an assistant coach at Central Michigan. She led the Hillcats for two seasons.

Men’s and women’s volleyball assistant – Bradley named Nate Thompson an assistant coach for its women’s team. A 2013 IUPUI graduate, Thompson spent the past two seasons as co-director of Vision Volleyball Club in Indianapolis and head coach at Fishers High School in Fishers, Indiana … Yami Nolan has been named head women’s coach at Dominican (California). She previously spent six seasons at the helm of Saint Joseph's (Maine).


Utah hired Casey Floyd as compliance coordinator. He previously served as the compliance and administration intern at The Summit League.


Bill Campbell, a Columbia graduate and former football coach, died April 18 at 75. Known as “The Coach of Silicon Valley,” Campbell had key roles in Apple, Google, Intuit and other tech companies after his coaching career. In 2009, the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame named its premier scholar-athlete award in his honor … Dwayne “Pearl” Washington, 52, one of Syracuse basketball’s all-­time greatest performers, died April 20. Washington had been diagnosed with a brain tumor last summer. This year’s Syracuse men’s basketball team honored Washington by wearing orange warmup shirts with “Pearl” and “31” inscribed in white. Washington played three seasons at Syracuse from 1983 ­to ­1986.


April 15

Presidents and chancellors – Geraldine M. Jones was named president of California (Pennsylvania) after nearly four years leading the university, first as acting president and then as interim president … Ben R. Sells was named president of Ouachita Baptist. Sells recently served more than nine years as vice president for university advancement at Taylor University in Indiana … Western Washington selected Sabah U. Randhawa as president. Randhawa, who most recently has served as Oregon State provost and executive vice president, succeeds Bruce Shepard, who is retiring June 30 after eight years as Western Washington’s president … James Timothy Cloyd was elected president of Drury. Cloyd previously served as president of Hendrix … Truman named Susan L. Thomas interim president. Thomas is the university’s executive vice president for academic affairs and provost … Former Southern California football player Lynn Swann was named athletics director at his alma mater. Swann, who was on four winning Super Bowl teams with the Pittsburgh Steelers, has worked as a broadcaster for ABC.

Athletics directors – Jeff Schulman, a Vermont athletics administrator for more than two decades and a former Catamount student-athlete, was promoted to Vermont’s director of athletics position. Schulman most recently was senior associate athletics director … Kip Shipley, former associate athletics director at La Sierra University in California, was appointed director of athletics at Green Mountain … Grand Valley State named Keri Becker director of athletics. Becker has been the university’s associate athletics director since August 2011 … UT Martin appointed head women’s basketball coach Kevin McMillan as interim athletics director [MP(C1] … Andy Hamilton, interim athletics director and head coach of both the men’s and women’s tennis teams at Grinnell, has been named the college’s director of athletics and recreation … Chris Kingston, who has served as Bowling Green’s director of athletics since 2013, is leaving the university to become a vice president at Learfield Sports … Saint Francis (Pennsylvania) announced that former Red Flash women’s basketball coach Susan Robinson Fruchtl has been named director of athletics. She replaces Bob Krimmel, who is retiring … John Moseley, who has been serving as interim director of athletics at Lincoln (Missouri), has been named to the position. He also will continue in his role as head men’s basketball coach.

Associate athletics directors – Saint Anselm announced that Mitch Capelle joined its staff as associate athletics director and Courtney McGrath, who had been serving as assistant athletics director, was promoted to associate athletics director. Capelle most recently was assistant athletics director for media relations at Wisconsin-Stevens Point for eight years … Doug Gnodtke has been named executive associate director of athletics and chief of staff at Michigan. Gnodtke, who earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Michigan, spent the past four years as a senior associate athletics director and chief financial officer at UConn … George Mason hired Jackie Campbell as senior associate athletics director and senior woman administrator. A veteran of more than 20 years in sports administration and compliance, Campbell has worked in collegiate athletics at the NCAA, the Atlantic 10 Conference and in university athletics departments … Debbie Corum was named senior associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at Southern Utah. Corum was most recently the senior associate athletics director at UConn.

Assistant athletics directors – Terry Porter has been named an assistant athletics director at Loyola Maryland. Porter joined the staff in May 2015 as an assistant director for NCAA eligibility … Drexel announced the promotions of Bryan Ford and Jamie Lindsay to assistant athletics directors for recreation and compliance, respectively. Ford, who joined the Drexel staff in 2009, was most recently the director of recreation. Lindsay had served as director of compliance since 2011 and compliance coordinator for four years before that … Arkansas promoted Charles Small to assistant athletics director for academic services. Small joined the Arkansas athletics staff in May 2014 as the director of student-athlete development.


Men’s basketball – After eight years as head coach at Sewanee (University of the South), Bubba Smith is leaving to be head coach at Lee. Sewanee went 20-8 this past season, the Tigers’ best record since 1998 … Simon Fraser selected lead assistant Steve Hanson to be interim head coach … UMBC hired Ryan Odom as head coach. Odom has 20 years of coaching experience, most recently at Lenoir-Rhyne, where he led the team to a 21-10 record last season … Central Connecticut State named Donyell Marshall head coach. Marshall, who played for 15 years in the NBA, has been an assistant coach at both the NCAA Division I and professional levels, most recently at Buffalo … Drexel hired Zach Spiker as head coach. Spiker spent the past seven seasons as the head coach at Army West Point and won 102 games … Herb Sendek was named Santa Clara’s head coach. Sendek has spent 22 seasons as a collegiate head coach at Arizona State, North Carolina State and Miami (Ohio), compiling a 413-295 (.583) career record … Kyle Smith, who coached at Columbia for the past six seasons, was named head coach at San Francisco. He replaces Rex Walters, who coached at San Francisco for eight years … UNLV interim head coach Todd Simon was hired as head coach at Southern Utah. Simon previously was associate head coach with UNLV … Steve Pikiell, the 2016 America East Conference Coach of the Year who led Stony Brook to six postseason appearances over the past seven years, was named head coach at Rutgers … Saint Louis hired Travis Ford as head coach. Ford has been a collegiate head coach for 19 seasons, most recently at Oklahoma State for eight years. 

Men’s basketball assistants – Jay Young, who spent 11 seasons as an assistant at Stony Brook, including the past seven as associate head coach, has been named an assistant coach at Rutgers … Saint Louis tabbed Will Bailey as an assistant coach. He spent the past six years at La Salle. 

Women’s basketball – Arkansas-Fort Smith hired Mississippi State assistant coach Elena Lovato as head coach. Lovato succeeds Louis Whorton, who retired at the end of the season after 30 years as head coach of the Lady Lions … After four seasons as head coach at Eastern Michigan, Tory Verdi resigned to take the head coaching job at Massachusetts … Bradley Athletics Hall of Fame member Andrea (McAllister) Gorski was named head coach at her alma mater. Gorski spent the past three years as associate head coach at Southern Illinois … Joseph Anders has been named interim head coach at New Mexico Highlands. Anders spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach at New Mexico … Daemen hired Jenepher Banker as head coach. Banker is a former assistant coach for Iowa State and Canisius. She also was head coach at Penn State-Behrend from 1988 to 1993.

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field – North Georgia women's cross country coach Tom Williams will take on additional duties as head coach for the university’s new women’s track and field program, which will begin competition in the 2016-17 season.
Field hockey assistants – Delaware elevated Jordan McKee to a full-time assistant coach after he previously served the past two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach with the program.

Men’s and women’s soccer – Eckerd men’s head coach Cristian Neagu has resigned and accepted an assistant coach position at North Carolina … Dixie State hired Tim Busen as the new head men’s coach. Busen recently served as head men’s coach at Adams State for six seasons.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving – Colorado Mesa head men’s and women’s coach Ron Allen resigned after his second season with the program. Allen was named the 2014 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men’s Coach of the Year after leading the men’s team to its first RMAC championship.

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Western Oregon hired Tommy Gott as head coach of its women’s team. Gott had been an assistant coach at Chico State since 2009 … Queens (North Carolina) named Hannah Long head coach of its women’s team. Long had been head coach at Southwestern (Texas) since 2004.


Drexel announced the promotions of Rachel Guerrera CreightonMolly Dacey and Abby Ferguson. Guerrera Creighton was named assistant director for student-athlete development. Dacey was appointed assistant director of academic support services, and Ferguson was named coordinator of athletics operations … Erin Eddinger has been named athletics business manager at Delaware. She previously held the same title at Arcadia.


USA South Athletic Conference selected Tom Hart as commissioner. Hart has been serving as interim athletics director of Bluefield State and has 24 years of experience as an athletics director and coach. He replaces Rita Wiggs, who is retiring after 16 years as commissioner … Adam Sopris was appointed assistant commissioner for the Little East Conference. He will serve as the primary communications representative for the conference, overseeing all strategic efforts in webcast and website development, new media and sports information. Sopris worked in game operations and media relations at Siena for the past three years. 


Bill Stephens, a longtime Central Arkansas athletics director and former Arkansas state representative, died April 4 at age 83 … Former Eastern Michigan quarterback Troy Edwards died April 6 at the age of 35. Edwards earned four varsity letters for the Eagles from 1999 to 2002.

Athletics directors – Mike Strickland, the longest-tenured athletics director in the Ohio Valley Conference, is retiring at Belmont. Since Strickland’s arrival in 1996, the Bruin program has added six sports and claimed 45 conference championships … Lander’s Jeff May, vice president and director of athletics, plans to step down at the end of the 2016-17 academic year. May has guided Lander athletics for 19 years … Howard Payne’s head football coach, Hunter Sims, has been named athletics director. Sims, who was named head football coach at the end of the fall 2015 semester, will serve a dual role as coach and athletics director … Marianne Reilly was named director of intercollegiate athletics at her alma mater, Manhattan. Reilly, who is the first female athletics director in the college’s history, spent the past 30 years at Fordham, where she has been senior associate athletics director since 1996. 

Assistant athletics directors – Vinnie James, who joined Temple as athletics business manager in July 2014, was promoted to assistant athletics director for business operations. James came to Temple from La Salle, where he spent two years as athletics business manager.


Baseball – Lew Jenkins announced his retirement after 22 years as head coach at St. Mary’s (Maryland). Jenkins’ 300-plus career wins include four 20-win seasons … Former longtime Saint Michael’s assistant coach Greg Wells was named the college’s interim head coach. Wells, who was an assistant at Saint Michael’s for 16 years, replaces Scott Strong, who resigned during his third year with the program. 

Baseball assistants – Former assistant coach Len Whitehouse and former student-athlete George Buteau have returned to Saint Michael’s as assistant coaches. Whitehouse, who was a major league pitcher, is back for his 15th year and fifth stint working in some capacity with the Saint Michael’s team. Buteau, a 2015 graduate, was a team captain during his junior and senior seasons with the Purple Knights.

Men’s basketball – UTSA hired Steve Henson as head coach. Henson, who has 15 years of coaching experience, most recently was an assistant coach under Lon Kruger at Oklahoma … Fayetteville State and head coach Alphonza Kee have agreed to part ways. Kee recently completed his seventh season at the helm of the Broncos program. Associate head coach Corey Thompson will serve as interim head coach … UNLV announced plans to hire Little Rock’s Chris Beard as head coach. In his only season at Little Rock, Beard led the Trojans to the Sun Belt’s regular-season and tournament championships and a victory over fifth-seeded Purdue in the NCAA tournament. Previously, Beard was an assistant at Texas Tech for 10 years … Simon Fraser head coach Virgil Hill resigned at the end of his first season … Fresno Pacific named C.J. Haydock head coach. Haydock spent the past season as the lead assistant with the team.

Women’s basketball – Columbia hired alum Megan Griffith as head coach. Griffith spent six seasons with Princeton’s women’s team, including the past four as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. As a student-athlete, Griffith was one of only 10 Lions to score more than 1,000 points during her career … Northwestern Oklahoma State hired Tasha Turney Diesselhorst as head coach. Diesselhorst spent nine years as a prep school coach in Pond Creek, Oklahoma … Southwest Minnesota State’s Allison Kruger resigned after six seasons as head coach. Assistant coach Abby Oakland was named interim head coach … UIndy hired Kristin Drabyn as head coach. She spent the past three years as an assistant coach at IUPUI … Lisa Faulkner, who spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach with Boston College, was named head coach at Point Loma … Kim Stephens was named head coach at Glenville State. Stephens, who was a team captain for the 2010-11 Glenville State team that won the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, was on the coaching staff at her alma mater before serving as an assistant at Sacramento State for three seasons.

Football – Donald Pittman has been relieved of his duties as head coach at Fort Valley State. Assistant head coach Keithen DeGrate will serve as interim coach. Pittman compiled a 40-33 overall record in seven seasons at the university.

Men’s and women’s golf – Lynn promoted Karli Heimbecker to head women’s coach. Heimbecker joined the Fighting Knights in 2015 as assistant coach.

Men’s and women’s soccer – King (Tennessee) promoted Talon Stroud to head men’s coach. Stroud joined the staff at King after two years as an assistant coach with the men’s and women’s teams at Lincoln Memorial … Roberts Wesleyan women’s head coach Bobby McColl has resigned to become men’s head coach at Daemen. In three years at Roberts Wesleyan, McColl went 35-20-5. Roger Groome, a 2002 graduate and former standout for the Redhawks men’s team, was named interim head coach.

Men’s and women’s soccer assistants – Holy Cross named Ben Graham as an assistant men’s coach. He will also serve as goalkeepers coach. Graham spent the past two seasons as an assistant at Stanford as the Cardinal won the 2015 national championship … Brett Bentley was hired as head coach of the Adams State men's team. Bentley most recently served as the lead assistant coach for Lubbock Christian.

Men’s and women’s tennis – Delaware hired Bruce Myers as head coach of the men’s program. Myers spent two seasons coaching the women’s team at Longwood. His career also includes stints at North Carolina A&T, Randolph-Macon and Immaculata.

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field – Ohio Valley cross country coach Brian Hesson will assume head coaching duties for the university’s new men’s and women’s track and field program, which will be added for the 2016-17 academic year.

Wrestling – American International named Joe Pistone interim head coach. Pistone, a 2000 graduate who wrestled at American International, became the third All-American in program history. He coached at Southern Maine for 12 seasons.

Men’s and women’s volleyball – Jeremy Sands, head women’s coach at St. Mary’s (Maryland), resigned to become assistant coach at Navy … Prentice Lewis has been named  head women’s coach at Dallas. She replaces Emily Holembek, who resigned. Lewis, who coached at TCU for 13 years and compiled a 245-174 overall record, most recently has worked as a high school teacher … Vanessa Volpe-Rivera was named head women’s coach at Saint Rose. She spent the past three seasons as an assistant for Brian Goodale, who is stepping down after 17 years at the helm … Bemidji State named Kevin Ulmer head coach of its women’s team. Ulmer comes to Bemidji State after serving as head coach at Bethel College in Indiana since 2012 … San Francisco State hired Matt Hoffman as head women’s coach. Hoffman spent three years as an assistant at Wichita State, the last two as the top assistant.


Sports information directors – Bob Lowe announced he was resigning his position as the director of sports information at Berry. Lowe has been involved in collegiate athletics for more than 17 years and was the director of communications for the Liberty League before joining Berry. 

Facilities and operations – Holy Cross hired Rachael Volpe as director of athletics facilities and operations. Volpe spent the previous 15 months with UConn athletics.


The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference named Tom Symonette as the coordinator of football officials. For the past 12 years, Symonette has served as a line judge in the NFL and was on the field in that capacity for the Super Bowl in 2014.


Tom Butters, former Duke vice president and director of athletics, died March 31 at the age of 77. He spent 30 years as an administrator at Duke and was the university’s athletics director from 1977 to 1997. Butters, a former major league pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, also coached the Blue Devil baseball team from 1968 to 1970 … Robert Starkey, 84, a former Shepherd student-athlete, coach and athletics director, died April 2 at his residence. Starkey finished his career as Shepherd's all-time winningest coach in men’s basketball with 360 wins over his 20-year (1968-88) career. Starkey served as director of athletics from 1976 to 1980 and had stints as an assistant football coach and head baseball coach.
