Division II honors schools for academic excellence

For the second straight year, Simon Fraser University, the NCAA’s first and currently only international member, led Division II with an Academic Success Rate of 100 percent, meaning all student-athletes from the 2004-07 cohort graduated within six years of original enrollment.

As part of the Division II Presidents’ Award for Academic Excellence program, now in its fourth year, Simon Fraser University will be honored alongside 23 additional Division II institutions for achieving four-year ASRs of 90 percent or higher.

Davis and Elkins College posted an ASR of 99 percent, while St. Michael’s College and Point Loma Nazarene University reported ASRs of 98 percent.

The Northeast-10 led Division II’s 24 conferences in ASR rates with six athletics programs posting scores of 90 percent or more.

“This year’s Presidents’ Award for Academic Excellence honorees are outstanding examples of Division II’s success in the classroom and off the field,” said Tom Haas, president of Grand Valley State University and chair of the Division II Presidents Council. “We are delighted to share in their successes and commend them for their continued excellence.”

The Academic Success Rate measures graduation success for Division II schools and includes virtually all Division II student-athletes, including transfers and those not receiving athletics scholarships. In 2012-13, only 62 percent of Division II student-athletes receive some level of athletics aid.

The Division II ASR also captures about 54 percent more student-athletes than the federal graduation rate. Unlike the federal graduation rate, the ASR also counts student-athletes who transfer to a school after initial enrollment elsewhere and removes from the rate student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible. The national four-year ASR is 71 percent.

Regardless of which measure is used, Division II student-athletes graduate at a higher rate than the general student body. The federal rate for the 2007 entering class of student-athletes was 55 percent, compared to 48 percent for the general student body.
