DIII sports sponsorship requirement waiver for spring sports recommended

Membership Committee sends recommendation consistent with action taken for fall and winter championship sports

The Division III Membership Committee recommended waiving the sports sponsorship requirement for spring sports at its meeting via videoconference Wednesday.

If the Division III Administrative Committee, acting on behalf of the Division III Management and Presidents Councils, approves the blanket waiver recommendation, it would eliminate the minimum number of contests and participants required for spring sports to meet sports sponsorship requirements during the 2020-21 academic year. This is consistent with a decision made in August waiving the sports sponsorship requirement for fall and winter sports.

The committee also reviewed sports sponsorship reporting obligations and the definition of a student-athlete for the 2020-21 year for the sports sponsorship and demographics form along with the athletics program assessments and annual reports. The deadline for this year’s sports sponsorship demographic form will not be delayed.

2021 Institutional Self-Study Guide

The deadline for the 2021 Institutional Self-Study Guide was extended to May 31, 2022. The committee agreed to extend the deadline from June 1, 2021, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The ISSG serves as a comprehensive self-review that institutions must complete once every five years, per the requirement in NCAA Bylaw 6, and is designed to provide each Division III school an assessment of its department’s application of the Division III philosophy and to identify successes and challenges in the operations of the department of athletics based on the institution’s needs.

Regional Rules Seminars

The committee confirmed the once every three years attendance requirement for select institutions at the Regional Rules Seminars remains unchanged this year. The 2021 Regional Rules Seminar will be conducted virtually June 7-9. NCAA staff will share a comprehensive schedule, additional registration details and information on satisfying the attendance requirement as they become available.
