Women's Volleyball Rules Committee Duties & Responsibilities


 

COMMITTEE INFORMATION FOR INDIVIDUALS INTERESTED IN POSSIBLY SERVING ON NCAA COMMITTEES

NUMBER OF COMMITTEE MEMBERS 

  • Eight members plus a secretary-rules editor who is the official rules interpreter but does not vote on the rules.

GENERAL DUTIES OF COMMITTEE MEMBERS 

  • Communicate with the volleyball community on rules issues during the season.
  • Compare ideas and gauge opinions on potential rules changes with colleagues in conference and region.
  • Communicate the rules-change process to the volleyball community.
  • Evaluate playing rules annually to ensure balance between offense and defense and fair play among other considerations.

NUMBER OF IN-PERSON MEETINGS PER YEAR (include approximate dates and days away from office) 

  • One in-person meeting per year, typically in late January, for four days, including travel.

NUMBER OF CONFERENCE CALLS PER YEAR (include the usual day of the week and average length of call) 

  • There are generally three conference calls throughout the year, including one in April, one in August and one in October. The dates and times are set by the committee members. The calls usually last one hour.

OTHER COMMENTS 

  • If applicant is an administrator, it is advisable for the individual to have played, coached and/or officiated the sport for multiple years, preferably on the collegiate level, or to have a serious interest in and working knowledge of the playing rules of the game. Members should strive to exhibit exemplary decorum during games attended, whether as a participant or observer. Note: This is not the committee that selects the Division I Championship bracket.
