Spotlight storyWelcome to Division III
James Schmotter, Chair of the Division III Presidents Council The Division III experience provides for passionate participation in a competitive athletics environment, where student-athletes push themselves to excellence, build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills, and are encouraged to pursue the full spectrum of opportunities available during their time in college. For many fans, alumni and former college athletes like me, cynicism about intercollegiate athletics is understandable. But most athletics experiences, such as those for the more than 170,000 student-athletes at the 444 colleges and universities that comprise Division III, including us here at Western Connecticut State University, are completely aligned with the NCAA’s educational mission.
