Guidance on Interaction with
Coaches of Prospects

A college coach should be proactive, well-informed and principled when interacting with prospects' coaches.  A college coach should take advantage of every opportunity to reinforce ethical conduct and informed decision-making.

  One Way

The Right Way. Best Practices

  NCAA

1.

Establish a uniform standard of behavior for yourself and your coaching staff in the recruiting process.

  • Always be honest and forthcoming.
  • Don't compromise your principles.

 2.

Get to know the nonscholastic coaches and the involved team/program/scholastic entity.

  • Encourage early communication between high school coaches and nonscholastic coaches.
  • Reach out to other prospects' coaches and NCAA coaches for additional information.

3.

Suggested conduct for college coaches before July events:

  • Be proactive in sharing information prior to July (e.g. limitations on contact).
  • Be thorough and know the details regarding your recruit's activities in July (e.g. get travel schedules in advance).
  • Identify who will be attending the July events (family, high school coach, etc.).
  • Enhance relationships with recruits, family members and coaches by explaining the intent behind NCAA rules.
