Guidance on a College Coach's Role Regarding Student-Athletes and Agents
| |
A college coach plays an integral part in proactively educating a student-athlete and his family about agent issues. A college coach should take advantage of every opportunity to reinforce ethical conduct and informed decision-making when communicating about this subject. |

| |
1. |
Identify student-athletes that will potentially interact with agents early in the student-athlete's career, particularly student-athletes who participate in USA Basketball and summer camps.
| |
2. |
Be proactive when educating the student-athlete, his family and circle of friends as to permissible and impermissible interaction with agents and persons associated with agents.
| |
3. |
Meet with the student-athlete and his family to establish a timeline and process for selecting an agent and defining the coaching staff's involvement in the process.
| |
4. |
Establish open communication with the student-athlete, his family, the coaching staff and the compliance department about agent issues. Frequent dialogue is necessary to keep everyone informed.
| |
5. |
At the conclusion of each season, discuss the rules pertaining to NBA tryouts, private workouts and the involvement of agents with student-athletes who "test the waters."
| |
6. |
Consult with coaches who have successfully navigated agent issues.
