Who is the NCAA?
What’s the difference between the national office, the membership and the Association? The national office refers to the staff and the bricks-and-mortar office building in Indianapolis. Schools, conferences and other affiliated organizations make up the membership. The NCAA is a combination of both.
How many people work at the national office and what do they do? The 400-plus employees at the national office provide advice and counsel to the governance and playing rules committees, interpret legislation, enforce NCAA bylaws, provide legal advice, run championships, administer education and youth programs and communicate with the NCAA membership and the public.
How long has the national office been in Indianapolis? Since 1999. The first national office opened in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1951. The Association also has a government relations office in Washington, D.C.
The folks at the national office make the rules, right? Wrong! The rules governing NCAA sports are actually developed through a unique membership-led governance system. Using this system, membership introduces and votes on proposed legislation. The national office staff provides administrative help, continuity, research and legal expertise.
Does the NCAA president have a vote in the legislative process? No. However, the NCAA president is a very influential leader who can shape the Association in ways big and small. Sitting university presidents, not athletics directors and coaches, ultimately run the NCAA through its governing system.
What does the NCAA do with the money it earns? The NCAA is a non-profit organization with 96 percent of its expenses benefitting its membership through distributions or services. The remaining amount funds national office building operations and staff salaries not tied to particular programs.
What is the NCAA’s top priority? The NCAA seeks to prepare student-athletes to succeed at life by offering academic and athletics opportunities to help them achieve their full potential.
How many championships does the NCAA sponsor? More than 46,000 student-athletes compete in the NCAA’s 89 championships in 23 sports across 3 divisions. Every winner earns the right to be called national champion.
