About Championships

The NCAA conducts 89 national championships in 23 sports. Competition is conducted in Divisions I, II and III, with 44 championships administered for women and 42 for men. Three are coed.

Sports Committees

NCAA sports committees deal primarily with the administration of NCAA championships. All 89 NCAA championships are overseen by a sports committee. They are composed of conference commissioners, associate and assistant commissioners, athletics directors, assistant and associate athletics directors, and head coaches from different regions throughout the country.

They recommend championship sites and dates, formats, and select teams and individuals for championships competition. In some cases, sports committees administer playing rules for their sports. There are 10 National Collegiate (all division) sports committees. The remainder are specific to Divisions I, II and III.
