The NCAA News

One of the most spirited rivalries in intercollegiate sports attracted a record crowd for a regular-season Division III women’s volleyball match.

Calvin and Hope, long known around the nation for their competition in men’s and women’s basketball, drew the first crowd in excess of 2,000 spectators for a regular-season volleyball contest October 17 at Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse.

The visitors beat Hope in five games in the battle of nationally ranked teams and by doing so tightened the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association race as its heads into its final two weeks. Hope saw its 14-match winning streak snapped as Calvin improved its league record to 10-2, just behind the Flying Dutch at 11-1.

The crowd of 2,307 easily topped the record of 1,850 who watched Roanoke’s 2000 match against Washington and Lee.
