Techniques for Effective Alcohol Management (TEAM)

Techniques for Effective Alcohol Management (TEAM) is a program of the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA). Team utilizes the resources of a unique coalition of partners dedicated to solving the problems arising when people drink too much alcohol at public assembly facilities. TEAM works nationally and locally, throughout the U.S. and Canada, to promote safe driving, and responsible, courteous behavior at these events. Founded in 1985, TEAM grew out of the concern shared by the management of several arenas, stadiums and auditoriums about the impact of alcohol abuse among sports fans. TEAM's goals are straightforward: to promote responsible alcohol service and consumption; to reduce alcohol-impaired driving; to insure a safe and enjoyable entertainment atmosphere; and to reduce potential liabilities to facilities and servers.

The centerpiece of TEAM's effort is its highly regarded Facility Alcohol Management (FAM) program. The TEAM coalition is currently revising the FAM program to reflect the changes in facility management and customers. The new curriculum will be pilot tested at Coors Field in January 1998 in Denver, CO. TEAM will continue to work with facility management to formulate effective alcohol policies and procedures that address such issues as the admission of guests with alcoholic beverages, on-premise sales to impaired guests or minors, transportation alternatives for impaired guests, and increasing public awareness about the risks of drinking and driving. This innovative program involves everyone at the public assembly facility -- management, concessionaires, security, parking lot attendants, ticket sellers and takers -- to reduce alcohol-related incidents and help guests arrive home safely. TEAM also works to raise public awareness through several national media campaigns working through coalition members such as the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Major League Baseball, and the National Basketball Association. The campaign messages reinforce the facility's alcohol policies and remind fans of the importance of arriving home safely. Some past campaigns include Winning at Home and On the Road, Celebration/Prom Graduation, and the Designated Driver Advantage.
