"The adjustment wasn’t too hard."

Maria Hauer, who was born deaf but can now hear at a 60-80 percent level after seven surgeries, competed for the Huskies’ cross country team in the fall, the Nordic ski team in the winter and ran the 800-meter and the 1,600-meter relay for the track team in the spring. She also dabbles in music, playing the violin, piano, baritone, trombone and the clarinet.

Colorado relishes true team victory

For the first time since 2007, the University of Colorado finished the NCAA Skiing Championships without an individual champion. However, that didn’t stop the Buffaloes from producing a supreme group effort as the team captured its 20th national championship overall and eighth NCAA title since the sport went coed in 1983.

Motivated by family

When Kelsey Phinney was a child, her father motivated her to ski farther despite fatigue. Today, he motivates her interest in neuroscience at Division III Middlebury College.
