The NCAA has embarked on a long-range-planning initiative that will be integrated throughout the enterprise. The approach involves crafting a comprehensive strategic direction based on the balance between the timeless principles of the Association and what the Association seeks to become within 10 to 30 years. That vision will be characterized by the articulation of an "audacious goal" and a vivid description -- what it will be like to achieve the goal.

This plan is not intended as a substitute for an annual operating plan. It does not detail all the initiatives, programs, and activities the Association will undertake in the course of serving its membership and intercollegiate athletics, nor can it foresee changes to the underlying assumptions on which key strategic choices are based. Instead, the strategic plan will articulate what the NCAA is not doing today but must be doing in the future to be successful.

A Message From NCAA President Myles Brand

NCAA President Myles Brand The strategic plan was developed to influence and color everything the Association does for years to come.

The process was quite thorough and, some might say, complex. But in one way, it was very simple. We assessed where we were, we determined our goals and we determined how to get from here to there.

Every constituency within the Association was involved in the formulation of the strategic plan. No fewer than 12 strategic-thinking sessions were conducted from March through July 2003 so that our membership and key relationships could discuss the Association's core purpose, its envisioned future and its major goals. Those sessions were followed in the fall 2003 by an extensive Web survey of the membership and several validation sessions involving key stakeholders.

The draft plan was presented to the NCAA Convention in January 2004 and approved by the Executive Committee in April 2004.
