NBA draft proposal would provide flexibility to student-athletes

Division I members will consider a variety of weighty proposals in the first full legislative cycle in the new governance structure, including a measure that would change the deadline for student-athletes wanting to declare for the NBA draft and another that would allow a conference to determine the criteria for its own football championship.

Dan Guerrero: Pioneering role model who followed his dreams

Growing up in a blue-collar town in southern California, Dan Guerrero placed his hope for a better life in sports and the pursuit of a college degree.  Knowing he wanted to excel in sports and in life, he looked to his community’s heavyweight boxing stars, fellow Hispanics and other minority athletes for inspiration. One of those athletes just happened to be Jackie Robinson.

UCLA returns to winning ways

The University of California, Los Angeles, is a regular contender for the NCAA National Collegiate Men’s Water Polo Championship. Going into this year’s championship, UCLA had won nine times overall, including in 1969, the inaugural year. But, the Bruins hadn’t won a title since 2004.

New role, familiar result for Virginia

The University of Virginia, which atypically entered this year’s tournament as an underdog,  defeated the No. 2 seed, UCLA, 4-2 in penalty kicks in the tournament final Dec. 14 in Cary, North Carolina.
