Financial Aid (Article 15)

Division II relies on a partial-scholarship model to administer athletics-based financial aid, which allows Division II schools to recognize student-athletes for their skills through athletics-based aid while at the same time keeping athletics budgets more in line with the institution’s bottom line. As such, the partial-scholarship model helps distinguish Division II colleges and universities from their Divisions I and III counterparts.

The Division II membership at the 2017 NCAA Convention adopted proposals to deregulate financial aid rules in the following manner, effective August 1, 2018:

  • Establish a model in which only institutional athletics aid is counted against individual and team equivalency limits.
  • Eliminate the ability for schools to issue term-by-term financial aid awards.
  • Allow schools to increase a student-athlete’s athletically related financial aid at any time, for any reason.
