A Whole New Bowl Game

Clyde Ferguson Jr. had just left a 26-year stint as a high school band director when his friend invited him to go bowling on a Sunday night. Ferguson couldn’t get enough. He came back Monday night and bought two balls, bags and shoes for him and his wife. On Tuesday, he took a job at the bowling alley, and over the next three years, he bowled at least three hours every day. His drive to learn and improve – and to share his knowledge with others – led the man who had once directed brass and woodwinds to become one of the top 100 bowling instructors in the country. And this year, he begins another phase of his career – at Belmont Abbey College, where he will lead the new bowling team in its inaugural season. In a way, he says, his career isn’t much different than how it began. “Through the art of bowling and the art of music,” he says, “you reach people where they are.”
