Sporting Sustainable Style

Ellie Ezekiel sees opportunities to sustain the earth all around her. So when the outside hitter on the volleyball team at Franklin & Marshall landed an internship at the campus Center for the Sustainable Environment, she combined her two loves to create recycled uniforms for her team’s 2016 season. After athletics approved her idea, she secured a campus grant to work with a recycled clothing manufacturer, which melted down 10 16-ounce water bottles and spun them into fiber used to produce the jerseys. The result: vibrant, 100 percent recycled polyester uniform tops. “Sustainability is the environment, but it’s more than that,” Ezekiel said. “It’s present in every part of our life.” Since last season, Ezekiel has worked to outfit four more Diplomats teams in recycled uniforms.
