Athletics directors

Fairfield announced the hiring of Paul Schlickmann as director of athletics. Schlickmann spent the previous seven years as the director of athletics at Central Connecticut State … Salem hired Patricia “Trish” Hughes as director of athletics. Hughes moves to Salem after having served as interim athletics director, assistant athletics director for external operations and senior woman administrator at Montevallo. She also had served as head women’s soccer coach at Montevallo.

Associate athletics directors

Massachusetts announced the promotion of Darrice Griffin to deputy director of athletics, Jeff Smith to senior associate athletics director for sport administration/internal operations, and Sean Quinn to associate athletics director for finance and administration. The athletics department also selected Joan Hopkins as associate athletics director for student-athlete development.

Assistant athletics directors

Massachusetts selected Kate DiSanto as assistant athletics director for administration and promoted Joe Connolly to assistant athletics director for sports performance.

Coaches

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field

Mount St. Vincent hired Andrew Gangemi to lead the men’s and women’s cross country teams and serve as assistant athletics director for strength and conditioning/recreation. Gangemi previously served as assistant men’s and women’s cross country and track and field coach and strength and conditioning/fitness coordinator at St. Thomas Aquinas.

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field assistants

Hofstra appointed Rebecca “Becky” Celorio as assistant men’s and women’s cross country coach. Celorio competed for Hofstra from 2012 through 2015.

Men’s and women’s gymnastics

Longtime Arizona assistant coach John Court was named interim women’s head coach for the 2017-18 season. Court has been on the Wildcats staff for the past 19 seasons under previous head coaches Bill Ryden and Tabitha Yim.

Men’s and women’s golf

Samford hired Haley Wilson as its head women's coach. Wilson moves to Samford after spending last season as an assistant coach at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Men’s and women’s ice hockey assistants

Scott Munroe was hired as a Trinity (Connecticut) men’s assistant coach. He most recently coached the goaltenders for the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse

Wingate head women’s coach Caline McHenry Olmsted has resigned after four seasons in the post. Bulldog assistant coach Kirsten Smith will serve as interim head coach … Suzanne Isador has become head coach of the UC Davis women’s program, replacing Tee Ladouceur, who recently accepted a coaching position at Denver. Isador formerly served as head coach at Penn State from 2000 to 2010.

Softball

Lindsey Ubrun was named Wagner’s head coach. Ubrun spent seven combined seasons as an assistant coach at Chattanooga, Iowa State and Florida Gulf Coast.

Men’s and women’s tennis

Saint Rose named Bobby Hanson its head women’s coach. Hanson has worked as an adjunct faculty member in the Saint Rose physical education department and also has worked for Interactive Health in Owings Mills, Maryland … Wentworth hired Kenny Hodgkins as men’s and women’s head coach. Hodgkins most recently served as the girls coach at Winthrop High School in Massachusetts.

Men’s and women’s tennis assistants

Trinity (Connecticut) hired Adam Clark as an assistant coach for its men’s and women’s programs. Clark most recently was an assistant coach at William Jewell.

Deaths

Geoff Geppert, former men’s lacrosse captain at Haverford, died Aug. 18 as a result of injuries sustained in an accident at Taughannock Falls State Park in New York. Geppert, a 2015 graduate, majored in economics. He developed WavesAudio, an iOS app, along with an app for news and information related to trading bitcoins.

Kathleen Waldron announced she will retire at the end of the 2017-18 academic year after eight years as president of William Paterson.

Athletics directors

East Tennessee State announced Scott Carter, senior associate athletics director and chief operating officer at the school and a former football standout, will start as director of intercollegiate athletics in September. Carter will replace Richard Sander, who has been the program’s director of intercollegiate athletics for the past four years. Sander will remain at the university as executive director of the Global Sport Leadership doctoral program … Ted Leland announced he will retire as director of athletics at Pacific on Oct. 23. He has held the post since July 2011 … Alexis Mastronardi, the director of athletics at Emmanuel (Massachusetts) since 2015, was hired as senior associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at Tufts … Chattanooga announced Mark Wharton as vice chancellor and director of athletics. Wharton spent the past four years as associate athletics director for development at Penn State … Harding Athletics Director Greg Harnden announced he will retire after the 2017-18 school year after a career spanning 21 years as athletics director and 31 years overall at the school. He was inducted into the Harding Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006.

Assistant athletics directors

Wisconsin-Parkside promoted Kenny Wilka to assistant director of athletics for sports medicine. Wilka previously served as director of sports medicine and head athletic trainer.

Coaches

Men’s basketball

Covenant hired Neal Young as head coach. Young comes to Covenant after spending the past four years as head coach at Goshen College in Indiana.

Women’s basketball

Kim Dweck was named head coach at Johnson & Wales (Rhode Island). Most recently, Dweck served as assistant coach at Robert Morris.

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field

Stockton hired Joe Dare as head women’s cross country and assistant track and field coach. Dare takes over the women’s cross country program from Ashley Parker, who remains on the staff as an assistant coach for the cross country and track and field programs. Dare previously spent three years as coach of the men’s and women’s cross country teams at Cabrini … Penn State-Abington named Jim McClernand as head coach of the men’s and women’s cross country program. He has coached at the high school and grade school levels … Grove City hired Jessica Smith as head men’s and women’s track and field coach. She replaces Todd Gibson, who will focus fully on his duties as the college’s athletics director. Smith spent the past three seasons as assistant track and field coach at her alma mater, Westminster … Robert Davis was named head coach of the Queens (New York) men’s and women’s cross country and track and field programs. Davis moves to Queens after spending four seasons at Virginia State … Urbana named Josh Lehman to a full-time position as head men’s and women’s cross country coach. He also will continue his duties as strength and conditioning coach and will help coordinate game-day duties for athletics communications.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse

Salem State hired Eric Small as head coach of the men’s team. Small spent the previous three seasons as head coach at Wheelock, where he helped restart the varsity program in 2015 … Baldwin Wallace hired Nicholle St. Pierre as head coach of its women’s team. St. Pierre served as head coach at Wittenberg for the past three seasons … Wells hired Meg Milliman as head coach of the women’s program. Milliman, who most recently served as assistant coach at Binghamton University, has head coaching experience at Frostburg State … Ramapo named Taylor Moore as head coach of the women’s team. Moore most recently coached at Ohio Wesleyan.

Women’s rowing

North Park hired Libby Scarlatos as head coach.

Men’s and women’s soccer

Megan McCormick, head coach of the women’s team at DePauw since 2014, resigned to accept a coaching position outside collegiate soccer. Doug Starnes, current assistant coach, will serve as the interim head coach for the 2017 season … Emmanuel (Massachusetts) named Dan Campagna and Keith Rogers as co-head coaches of its women’s team. Rogers has served as an assistant coach for the program for the past 16 years, and Campagna attended Emmanuel and has been a full-time staff member since 2011 as the director of athletics communications, sports information and compliance.

Softball

UT Arlington appointed Peejay Brun as head coach. Brun, who has experience as a head coach at Hawaii Hilo and Siena, served as an assistant coach at Texas State for nine of the past 11 seasons.

Men’s and women’s tennis

Ali Moyer Flores, who played tennis at Gettysburg for four years and graduated in 2008, will take over as head coach of the women’s program at her alma mater. She takes over from Andy Knox, who will remain head coach of the men’s team … Jeff Kutac was named head coach of the women’s and men’s teams at Ozarks (Arkansas).

Conferences

The Big East Conference named Chris Schneider as senior associate commissioner, sports administration and championships; John Paquette as senior associate commissioner, sports media relations; James Greene as senior director, championships; Tania Kennedy as senior director, championships; Briana Weiss as senior director, conference operations; and Hanna Wilson as office and conference services assistant.

Deaths

Zach Hollywood, 19, a redshirt freshman on the men’s basketball team at Ball State, died Aug. 22.

Athletics directors

Incarnate Word selected Brian Wickstrom as director of athletics. Wickstrom spent the past four years as director of athletics at Louisiana-Monroe … Mike Williams, athletics director at California, has said he will not seek an extension of his contract, which runs through May 6. Williams has been athletics director since May 2015 and served as interim athletics director for 10 months before that.

Associate athletics directors

South Florida announced several moves in its senior administration. Marquita Armstead will move into a new role as senior associate athletics director/senior woman administrator from her position as senior associate athletics director for compliance. Yulander Wells, the current athletics chief financial officer, was named senior associate athletics director for administration. Kevin Toso will transition to senior associate athletics director/chief financial officer from his current role as executive director of university budgets and reporting.

Others in administration

Jess Duff was named special assistant to the athletics director/department head at MIT. Duff most recently worked at the NCAA national office, where she was an assistant coordinator for the NCAA office of inclusion.

Coaches

Baseball

Erskine named Mark Crocco head coach. Crocco comes to Erskine from Presbyterian, where he served as assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator.

Men’s basketball assistants

Appalachian State added I.J. Poole as director of basketball operations and Tyler Persinger as director of player development.

Men’s and women’s golf

After leading the Troy women’s program to three Sun Belt Conference championships, Bart Barnes was named head coach of the Troy men’s team. The school will immediately begin a search for a new women’s head coach.

Women’s rowing

Sarah Trowbridge, a 2012 U.S. Olympian, has been named head coach for the women’s rowing program at San Diego. Trowbridge replaces Kim Cupini, who recently accepted the head coach position at SMU.

Beach volleyball and men’s and women’s volleyball

Salem State hired Karen McNulty as head coach of the women’s team. McNulty spent last season as head coach at Daniel Webster and previously was a longtime coach at Massachusetts Lowell.

Deaths

Dick Rizk, the head men’s lacrosse coach at Stockton from 1992 to 2009, died Aug. 15 at age 84. Rizk compiled a record of 140-116 on the Osprey bench.
