Athletics directors

Incarnate Word selected Brian Wickstrom as director of athletics. Wickstrom spent the past four years as director of athletics at Louisiana-Monroe … Mike Williams, athletics director at California, has said he will not seek an extension of his contract, which runs through May 6. Williams has been athletics director since May 2015 and served as interim athletics director for 10 months before that.

Associate athletics directors

South Florida announced several moves in its senior administration. Marquita Armstead will move into a new role as senior associate athletics director/senior woman administrator from her position as senior associate athletics director for compliance. Yulander Wells, the current athletics chief financial officer, was named senior associate athletics director for administration. Kevin Toso will transition to senior associate athletics director/chief financial officer from his current role as executive director of university budgets and reporting.

Others in administration

Jess Duff was named special assistant to the athletics director/department head at MIT. Duff most recently worked at the NCAA national office, where she was an assistant coordinator for the NCAA office of inclusion.



Erskine named Mark Crocco head coach. Crocco comes to Erskine from Presbyterian, where he served as assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator.

Men’s basketball assistants

Appalachian State added I.J. Poole as director of basketball operations and Tyler Persinger as director of player development.

Men’s and women’s golf

After leading the Troy women’s program to three Sun Belt Conference championships, Bart Barnes was named head coach of the Troy men’s team. The school will immediately begin a search for a new women’s head coach.

Women’s rowing

Sarah Trowbridge, a 2012 U.S. Olympian, has been named head coach for the women’s rowing program at San Diego. Trowbridge replaces Kim Cupini, who recently accepted the head coach position at SMU.

Beach volleyball and men’s and women’s volleyball

Salem State hired Karen McNulty as head coach of the women’s team. McNulty spent last season as head coach at Daniel Webster and previously was a longtime coach at Massachusetts Lowell.


Dick Rizk, the head men’s lacrosse coach at Stockton from 1992 to 2009, died Aug. 15 at age 84. Rizk compiled a record of 140-116 on the Osprey bench.

Associate athletics directors

Northern Illinois hired TJ Feuerbach as senior associate athletics director for development and revenue generation … Eddie Duffey, longtime senior associate athletics director at West Georgia, will step down at the end of 2017. He plans to take an administrative position with City Station, a community center that is under construction by Southern Hills Christian Church in Carrollton, Georgia.

Assistant athletics directors

Northern Illinois hired Collin Bruning as assistant athletics director for ticket operations … James Madison hired Michael Fisher as assistant athletics director for development for the Duke Club.


Men’s and women’s lacrosse

Lees-McRae announced Darry Thornton has resigned as head coach of the men’s program after four seasons.

Men’s and women’s soccer

Shepherd promoted Alex Jones to head coach of the men’s team. Jones replaces Jonathan Thayil, who will concentrate on his duties as head women’s coach. Jones, who has been an assistant men’s soccer coach since 2016, also will serve as a strength and conditioning coach … Jason Surrell is stepping away from coaching after 17 seasons as head coach of the women’s team at Azusa Pacific. He cited personal reasons for the move.

Softball assistants

Appalachian State added Shane Showalter as an assistant coach working primarily with hitters. Showalter most recently served on Austin Peay’s coaching staff for five seasons, including the past two seasons as head coach of the Governors.

Men’s and women’s swimming and diving

Sean Weddell was hired as head coach of the men’s and women’s teams at Lees-McRae. Weddell has more than 10 years of collegiate coaching experience.

Beach volleyball and men’s and women’s volleyball

Randolph-Macon announced changes to its coaching staff to accommodate the introduction of the school’s men’s team, which will begin play during the 2018-19 academic year. Bill Rogers, head coach of the women’s team for the past 14 seasons, will serve as director of volleyball. Savanna Love, assistant coach of the women’s team for four seasons, will be coordinator of volleyball for both the men’s and women’s teams. Jared Horrigan, assistant women’s coach for three seasons, will be promoted to head men’s coach.


Frank Broyles, who worked more than 55 years at Arkansas as head football coach and athletics director, died Aug. 14 at age 92 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. In 19 seasons as head football coach of the Razorbacks, Broyles amassed a record of 144-58-5.



Peter Blumenauer was named head coach at St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn). Blumenauer most recently worked at Islip High School in Islip, New York.

Men’s basketball

SUNY Oneonta named Cameron Conover head coach. He led the team to a 17-11 record as interim coach this past winter … Covenant head coach Arte Culver resigned to pursue other collegiate coaching opportunities. He spent one season at Covenant.

Women’s basketball

The University of Texas at San Antonio named Kristen Holt head coach. Holt has served as associate head coach for the past four seasons. She replaces Luby Lichonczak, who was head coach for four seasons.

Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field

SUNY Oneonta named Brett Willmott head coach of the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field teams. Willmott served as interim coach during the 2016-17 year.

Men’s and women’s lacrosse

Julie Beer was named head coach of the new women’s team at Anna Maria. The program will begin competing at the varsity level in spring 2019. Beer, who started the women’s team at Centre, spent eight years there as head coach … Haverford head coach Lauren Wray resigned to accept a position as assistant athletics director and women’s lacrosse coach at the Agnes Irwin School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Wray recently completed her sixth season as head coach.
